It's not mint flavored? Seriously, I'm not using or working around a lot of Mint additions I don't really care for.

And, when pronounced correctly, Mubuntu will sound rather bovine.

If only they had based this on the LTS.

Still, it looks more interesting than stock.

After having used XFCE4 on OpenBSD, this will be my WM of choice -- easy, out of the way, and none of the asinine things Gnome 3 has given us. When we emulate Microsoft's GUI it seems we tend to emulate their subsequent failure as well. I have no idea how Unity hasn't created a revolt

That being said, Ubuntu has always been a great transitional distribution for Win32 folks and seeing Debian moving towards a clearly announced errata support cycle is pleasing.

It looks to be on 14.04, what did I miss?

When I go to their page, I see this:

ubuntu-mate-14.10-alpha1-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent

which I presume to mean it's based on 14.10, which is not the LTS but the next release, I believe. If there's a version based on 14.04 I haven't found it yet, but I would be more interested in that.

The release is still in Alpha stage. It makes sense that this would not be based on 14.04 which is already released. They are probably shooting to be ready by the time 14.10 is.

Egad, an alpha on an alpha that releases in October. Yes, too bad it's not on an LTS but there's always 16.04. Mint 17 Mate isn't as good as I thought so I'm back to seeking mode.
