Cisco 867VAE-K9 - slow speed issuesHey everyone. I just swapped out my actiontec q2000 with a cisco 867VAE VDSL2 ISR. Now that I have the basics configured I've noticed that i'm only pulling about 35mbps of the 50111 i'm trained at.
I have the router going from Gi0 to a cisco gigabit smart switch. I had the smart switch in with the q2000 and had no speed issues.
Here's my config, showing my running config, controller vdsl 0, interface Gi0 and interface eth0.
Any advise or help is appreciated...

The bottleneck wouldn't be the VDSL2 port, it would be the routing capability. I suspect that's what the issue is. I couldn't find any concrete numbers either but start downloading something that maxes the link out (at 35M) and check CPU utilization (show processes cpu). |

Look at routerperformance.pdf for numbers on what a Cisco router can move -- basically, 860 is rated for 12.8Mbps baremetal. Some immediate thoughts : - take your "sh controller vdsl 0" to your ISP to review, specifically the attenuation and SNR #s. The good news is at least this Attainable Rate: 70032 kbits/s 12937 kbits/s tells you the 867's training up properly. - what does "show proc cpu hist" and "show proc mem" show right now? - keep an eye on your xEthernet interfaces, specifically for the input/output drops and input/output errors counters. If they start incrementing, you may have cabling or other issues. The fact you're pulling 36Mbps tells me you're doing better than what the vendor claims for this equipment; problem is the limit isn't something in your config, but just what the actual hardware can push. You may have to get something like the 890 or a 1900series with a VDSL WIC card. My 00000010bits Regards |

That document predates the 867VAE which is more of an ISR G2, although I'm sure it's no trailblazer. There's an "ISR G2 performance" document out there on the interwebs - I cannot get a link on Cisco to it but Google should help.... |

Can't find much of a datasheet on the MPC8300, though IIRC that was clocked around 500Mhz max. already tried ip route cache, that didn't seem to do anything. It appears the cpu is maxing when I'm doing a speedtest or large download. So if I do end up going the 1941 route, which ehwic card will work with CL Annex A?
Cisco 1-port VDSL2/ADSL2+ EHWIC over POTS (EHWIC-VA-DSL-A) is what i'm looking at.. |

Really it's a question of confirming the chipset on your ISP's DSLAM and comparing to the datasheet, and/or putting in a call to your ISP, for better or worse... Hope this all helps you out! In all those cases, the top process is IP INPUT, which generally denotes the router moving packets. You've pretty much no other option but to get a higher-end ISR model.
Just so you don't go buying the first router you see with 'Cisco' on it and hitting a limitation of the hardware again :
- your package is 50Mbps down? What about the upload speed? Based on your sync rate, it looks like 70D / 13U.
- do you want / expect the router to do anything else other than act as a DSL modem and NAT?
- if you do by a G2 router (the 19xx, 29xx, and 39xx series ISRs), are you aware of how the feature licence works?

I know this is the Cisco forum, but for this kind of a situation with just a single DSL line (looking at the config nothing appears special), there are a lot more cost-effective options that can attain the required throughput with a similar level of configurability and capabilities. For example, my preferred setup of a cheap bridge (e.g. ZyXEL Q100 which is officially supported by CenturyLink, OP's ISP) for ~$60 and an EdgeRouter Lite for $100. I have 40/5 now.
As for the other question, yes, i'm aware that there are cheaper options available. However, my choice to set up a cisco based network has to do with my job and my CS/Networking degree in school. As for the licensing, i'm trying to work that out before I make the jump to the 1941. If I have to pay for an additional license to add in the VDSL EHWIC card i'll probably just move down to the 20/5 speed tier with centurylink. |

1941 datasheet here, goto Table 9 for the specific part #s to order. You should be able to find a part# for a 1941 with xDSL WIC card, I just don't have a PN# offhand. In terms of ISR G2 / 15.x licencing, here's a pretty high-level document to understand it. The key takeaway is a) you get the full IOS on a G2, but b) to use certain features, you have to licence the specific functionality under the particular 'technology package'. That's why I asked whether you only want a device that does xDSL modem function with the WIC card and basic NAT, or do you (eventually) want to do more advanced things like firewall, VPN, voip, QOS, IDS/IPS, etc. Other thing to consider is getting SMARTnet with the equipment so as to get support for the hardware on failure, technical assistance from TAC, and also authorized software downloads from Cisco. If you lose the xDSL modem requirement, you could consider get a 89x or 180x or 181x 2ndhand that'll still give you the Cisco learning you want and not have to deal with the licencing headache.
