suggestions for modem and router

I am currently using a docsis 2 modem (motorola 51xx modem, not sure which model since I've had a few) and an older linksys router (E1500). I'd prefer to stick with the stock FW on router since I bricked a router flashing to third party previously. Wondering what suggestions people have for an upgrade, both in respect to speed and security for both? I plan to purchase rather than rent.

Re: suggestions for modem and router

I like to keep my cable modem and router separate..

I got and like my Cisco (DPC3010) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. So far so good.

I got a Cisco RVS042G for my router and I got a separate Wireless Access point for my wireless.

+1 for the ASUS routers...

I have a Motorola SB5101U modem and last year I upgraded my router to an ASUS RT-N66R (from Best Buy). I use the stock factory firmware recently upgraded to the 3.0.0.4.376_1071 version. In my case I have a Windows 8.1 laptop, a Win 7 desktop, an HP J4680 AiO (fax/print/scan) device, a DIRECTV wireless Cinema Connection Kit, an iPad 4, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5S connected to it. The router is very stable. The router has a Guest wireless LAN function which I use for grandkids, etc which isolates them from our private network. Absolutely no problems at all...

FWIW I am on the Preferred speed tier for our HSI...

Re: suggestions for modem and router

+1 for asus routers. They are the best. The RT-N66U is fast enough that it will future proof you for cox's upcoming gigabit tier (on wired anyways -- it max's out at 900mbps or so). Or you can spend an extra $100 for the AC version if you think you'll use it.

Also, +1 either the Cisco DPC3010 or the Motorola sb6141 willl both work great, 8X4 channels and gigabit ports. I would personally recommend just buying modem right from cox store, so you know it will be supported and if theres any issues with it cox will fix it since you bought it from them. Last i checked their prices were actually pretty decent, anyways, they had the DPC3010 for $79 which is the same price as newegg.

If you are a member of Costco, you can get the SB6141 for $75. Can't beat their lifetime return policy.

+ 1 for ASUS routers, love mine.

I have a SB6120 and would probably update to an 8x8 or one of the 8x24's that come out in the near future (next year?)

I do not want a gateway modem, I like being able to troubleshoot which piece of equipment could be the problem should issue arise.

Thank everyone for their suggestions. Read through some of the ASUS reviews on Newegg. Lot of folk complaining about disconnects. BTW..anyone know if the Cleveland area has gotten a speed increase on the preferred tier?

I have Cox digital telephone, internet and TV. I was wondering if I required a special modem and router combo. I was looking at the Motorola SB6141, but haven't nailed down the router. Do I need anything else to make all of my services work? If there is a guide to follow, please direct me to it. TIA.
