FileHippo tests adware distributing download managerquote: Distributing adware to computer users is a lucrative business. It is that lucrative that software companies as well as download portals have started to integrate services such as Open Candy into their installers to earn extra money.

I've not been using Major Geeks as they expressly require cookies which I always reject from third party sites.

Even sourceforge started doing a limited amount of this and it was a horrible idea then too. I feel like we need to be out there creating awareness among end users about how much of a security risk installer bundling actually is. Distributors have obviously made a calculation that users are ignorant of the consequences and will not vote with their feet. |

It seems to be happening more and more. I've had downloads and selected no toolbar or third party install from the installers but still found other software installing as well with my selected program. The war will never end. |

I download updates to piriform products from FileHippo and am able to avoid the greyware. You just have to be careful, which is probably the biggest issue with this sort of thing. |

Beware of the Bloat. I've got third party cookies blocked on Pale Moon, yet I've been able to download from Major Geeks. |

Download.com is one of the oldest offenders. I would not think of downloading anything from there although it's good that you mention the domain so that folks are aware. See Wikipedia | Download.com & Adware - » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do ··· m#Adware |

Generally, I fetch all my downloads via IE11 that has per-site cookie permissions set and Major Geeks would not be one of them. |

I found it on google search for download manager. I'll try to find it again tomorrow with my computer. My tablet gets completely different results. Edit: I apologize, the one I ended up with did not come from Softpedia. I 'll get the one I had tomorrow. |

I don't get it. Why should I download software from third-party sites? Wouldn't it be easier - and a lot safer - to download software directly from the author's / official website? |

Some host via download sites due to bandwidth costs.
Sadly some sites require their download managers I avoid them since IMO the download manager should stay dead with its cousin dialup. |

My experiences with them have been good, but my sample size is small. Because Download Crew sells software, they don't need other revenue streams to depend on, and they also would want to protect their own reputation I would think. |

I find it all very interesting in that software for your iPad, iPhone, Android Phone, Windows Phone, Windows Store etc and web sites can all be ad supported and really no one has freaked out over that, but ads on a Windows Desktop are evil. Granted installing toolbars and other apps that weren't wanted is truly evil, but I can't figure out why someone hasn't done an ad interface like like the ones mentioned previously for Windows Desktop apps. If someone did would people be as accepting of it as apparently they have been with other platform?

Probably has to do with the perceptions of having complete control on what goes on with the PC, and pretty much no control on the i-whatevers. |
