Something eating my screens?Just got back from my summer camp in upstate ny. These are some close up pics of the aluminum screens. On many of them up near the top are these little holes. On just about everyone of them at the " bottom " of the hole is what might be 'Bird crap ' ..? I'm thinking it has to be, don't know what else it could be, but, these are Aluminum screens! Any thoughts? |

but just fyi, it just takes ONE little hole like that, and mosquitoes will somehow all individually find it, and get in...
so at least seal them temp with tape or patch, til you can rescreen |

I have the same problem with Squirrels on my screened porch. Always in the same spot. Have had to replace that section maybe 5 times. |

These screens are all getting replaced next summer. Also, the damaged ones are only on the front of the cabin, there are about 12 in all. But the holes are only in about 4 of them. Weird. |

Are the screens old? It could be dry rot and something blew into them like a stick during a storm. |

said by nonameyet:On many of them up near the top are these little holes. If it is corrosion my comment will be of no help, on the other hand if it is caused by animals consider the following: Determine if the screens are grounded by measuring the electrical resistance between the screens and utility ground. If they are not grounded do the following: If you have power on year around, get one of these and wire it to the screens: Zareba® 2 Mile AC Low Impedance Fence Charger » www.tractorsupply.com/en ··· -chargerIf you turn power off when you are not using the camp get one of these: Zareba® 2 Mile Solar Fence Charger » www.tractorsupply.com/en ··· -chargerDo not forget the sign: Zareba® Electric Fence Warning Signs, Pack of 3 » www.tractorsupply.com/en ··· ack-of-3My parents erected a chicken wire fence around their vegetable garden. It did not stop animals from raiding the garden each night. I electrified the fence and the problem stopped. |

I had a hole show up on a screen door like those. For the life of me, I was like, is something eating this? Then a bird flew into the door. |

Both vinyl and aluminum screens age and get brittle. A sharp impact by a bird, twig, even a big bug hitting the screen can cause these holes. I was cleaning the screens on my house and just removal caused one of them (over 10 yrs old) to fall out of the frame and disintegrate on hitting the ground. |

Could be brittle (you could tell by poking at them) or some small animal chewing. I used to keep seed in a plastic barrel in an outbuilding with screened windows. The squirrels would sit and observe where the food was coming from in a nearby tree. One day I noticed a hole in the screen and patched it. Next day there was another hole. Finally I noticed a red squirrel would go up a tree and leap down onto an empty plastic pool that was leaning against the building and bounce 3 feet up into the window (horizontal crank out) and grab onto the screen. Moved the seed elsewhere and the pool and no trouble since. |

Well, thanks so far for the replies. To answer, I have never seen a squirrel up there. Ever. I've been going up there every summer for the past 38 years...Ever.
We do see chipmunk s ( do they chew like squirrels ?)
Might be birds...( or flying, dropping, bird crap ) the Holes are Only on one side of the cabin, the screens are on 3 sides. The holes are about 10 feet off the ground. And Only on the top 1/3 of the screen( they are all about 48"X48" square) .
They are all quite old, the cabin was rebuilt in 1967, some of the screens have been replaced twice. But, they still flex...without crumbling ... |
