[Cable] Off to a bumpy start

OK, got transferred today from Start (with which I had a stellar experience) and I'm already concerned by speed fluctuations.
These are on a 30/5 package:

Secondly...what is with this traceroute? First hop resolves to a DOD IP range????? I expected to see an Ebox router IP somewhere in there (unless 7.223.68.129 is actually Ebox and Arin is completely messed up). I see just Robbers and Tiscali - tinet - other than the weird first hop.
Other traces posted in the forum had Ebox IPs as expected.

Can you guys chime in and tell me if I am to expect peak time 70% speed drops and secondly if the traceroute looks normal to you?

the 7.X.X.X has been showing up all over the place and is normal. As far as your traces they look perfectly fine

I beg to differ:

1. 7.223.68.129 - if used by Rogers as a private IP, this is wrong. The public address still shows as owned by DOD and I hope the shortage of IPv4s has not pushed people to be careless with assignments.
2. based on the traceroute, I am 100% a Rogers customer, as nowhere in the path I see any hop belonging to my ISP. Maybe I am missing something...

Last but not least, the weird traces don't explain the speed drops (and associated Netflix buffering - which got me into testing...) - just that I can't ask Ebox what's going on since they are not in the path.

The 7.X range is not DOD it's just internal ip for routing. We already noticed and asked our upstream but if you search through dslreports for traceroute you will see competitors client who run traceroute have posted similar ips. Don't worry about it I was stumbled too when i saw it first time but it's okay. They won't change it, it's what was assigned for TPIA i believed.

As for speed, our interface with cable topped out yesterday between 22h05 and 22h35 for a few minutes. We got CBB increase from 200M to 300M on July 4 yet it seems it was not enough yesterday during 30 minutes. Next increase is scheduled around august 1st for 300M -> 400M. I posted a one week traffic window of the port. You can see it's the first night we hit 300M. Since there is not a lot of users yet it is possible the 300M port is filled momentarily for a few seconds/minutes. As traffic grow, we will see less of this. I expect by the time we approach the 1G speed, traffic will be much smoother across the board. We're normally allocating sufficient amount of bandwidth per users but there could be small burst out of range. If it's hitting limit too often we're going to change our August order. We're still learning the CBB curve for this market and so far i was not too off although we're never 100% covered unless we provision a full 10G of CBB which woud be insanely expensive for the amount of users paying back.

JP...the kind of answer I was actually looking for. Thank you.

I don't mind testing/poking around/asking uncomfortable questions as this is my daily job (I work for a telecom mfg) as long as I get answers

It is really nice seeing this kind of transparency.

Oh, on that trace route: why am I not seeing any Ebox node in the path? The traces from guys on the Québec side look normal.

Must be a red cable thing mugurd. My DSL trace routes from Ottawa have ebox in them for the first 2 hops.

See, I can't complain about latency or speed as JP can tell me I'm not his customer
Seriously though, this looks like a different model for RED cable and I wonder how much control does Ebox have in a configuration like this. It's almost like Robbers routes directly the traffic - which probably explains why I am showing as geolocated in TO based on IP.

7.0.0.0/8 is assigned to DoD but doesn't appear in the global routing table, that's why it's used (badly) as RFC1918 for internal routing.

I don't understand why you don't see ebox routers in the traceroute. Look like Rogers setuped you as a Rogers customer and not TPIA.

I guess you did not had issues in the past 48hours. Just to compare you can see Wednesday and Thursday for CBB (peak 230 Mbits). Tuesday was really exceptional (most likely due to the soccer game). You can see it's now congestion free.

Agreed, that seemed to have been a spike. Let's hope there is no new "American Idol" phenomenon...I remember the days of the iPhone launch at AT&T and the traffic spikes we had every evening when the show was on.

I hate to insist...but what about my traceroute? It really gets me worried. At least I need another ONT RED customer to provide a sample, if possible.
