Removing the fridge smellAnyone knows that smell that a fridge gives off inside when it's been turned off for awhile, what works good in getting rid of that smell? |

Wash it first, then baking soda. |

Put an open box of baking soda in there and it will absorb the odor. Also, a shallow dish with vinegar can help too, but don't mix them . |

Wear eye protection gloves and make sure there is plenty of ventilation. Consider using a fan to keep vapors from the cleaning product from building up in the fridge while your are cleaning it. |

I was reading that charcoal works good as well.. but I just spent a hour and a half cleaning it out (nasty) and I closed the freezer and I noticed that smell seems to come from the Styrofoam area of the fridge |

Baking soda + 10
If you are in a hurry to remove the smell, cover a whole dinner plate with baking soda (more surface area) and leave it in the refrigerator. Once the smell is gone, you can replace it with a smaller object to contain the baking soda.
I speak from experience of having Chinese in-laws putting stinky fish left-overs in the refrigerator in the least-air-tight container possible (A bowl with a desert plate on top as a cover). |

I believe the point about the baking soda is that it absorbs the moisture/odor. I think coffee would do a similar thing with soaking up the moisture too. A dish of vinegar works well on airborne orders. If it's musty smell then that's probably moisture. Like when you turn off a car AC and blow only air out. |

Stick a Ozone generator in it. |

Baking soda removes cigarette smoke smell in a car overnight. And that's all I know! |

You can make a solution of Oxyclean and apply with microfiber cloth wrapped on something flexible. Wipe off after some time with just damp cloth and then pat dry. Run a small fan in the fridge compartment for an hour or more. |

I wouldn't have thought of that but I own an O3 generator so I might try that next time I clean the fridge. |

Re baking soda: Arm & Hammer makes a box with a special side you uncover to increase the surface area so it works better. |

bleach is good. you may have to leave it overnight. pool bleach is same chemical, double strength.
but if the mold or source is inside the passages/styro, the smell will come back whenever the fridge gets hot and moist again.
so if you are feeling handy, just take apart the covers to the air passageways, usually just a few screws. to SEE if there's residual mold mildew etc anywhere. bottle brushes will help in recessed passageways.
worst case you may have to tip the refrigerator over, to get the liquids into the passageways. if you do that, don't run the refrig until it has stood upright for a day, to make sure the oil in the pipes drains back down to the compressor.
doing all that outdoors, with hose with nozzle, makes the job faster. |
