[TV] MLB HR Derby quality sucks, WTF

My gosh, anyone watching the MLB HR derby? It's a ESPN broadcast that looks like absolute ass on Sportsnet.

Its a pixelated widescreen mess.

WTF is Rogers doing? They can't even get a proper feed for this?

I'm watching it on Sportsnet East, and it's looking perfect for me. What channel are you watching it on?

All of the sportsnet channels look shit to me. Things are pixelated, look closely at text or a fine mesh or whatever.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing it. I do have a 720p tv though, so if your tv is better quality, perhaps that's why. I'm not seeing any pixelation though.

Yeah 55" 1080p, but the pixelation is really noticeable. It's like its a 720x480p upscaled, not a 1280x720p or 1920x1080i format.

Yeah, I sat beside the tv and see what you're seeing. Doubt we'll be able to fix that tonight, but I'll provide feedback internally in hopes that we'll get the game looking perfect tomorrow.

Also BRUTAL pixelation during high motion when they show the ball going into the seats etc...

Normally the Blue Jays games look pretty good, this is waaaay subpar, I'm guessing its some kind of fault with the source feed, and/or that Rogers is recompressing it way too much, but I also think the source feed is lower res than 720p or 1080i.

I don't know what's going on. I've come across a number of Rogers Jay's feeds that have been absolutely horrible. Here is a picture I took from June 12th. The blocking is 9 pixels wide for an effective horizontal width of 213pixels instead of 1920.

A number of other Rogers and non Rogers stations have been just as bad, if not worse.

Yeah thats brutal overcompression...

Rogers really needs to get their act together with MPEG4/H264. Fibe is doing it, Satellite is doing it. Rogers is stuck on MPEG2...

MPEG2 is fine if you use a higher bitrate, but Rogers has been skimping. Too much bandwidth wasted on crappy channels.

Any word if they know what the issue was, and the game will be good quality tonight?

What you are looking at is compression, Rogers has squeezed the crap out of the channel and now when anything is other then still video, it pixilates.

Happens on NFL football too, especially when CityTV and/or one of the Rogers sports channel simsub.

It appears there were issues with the feed that we were provided - our internal teams are investigating to see what can be done to ensure a great feed tonight.

Nonsense. Watched it on my 1080p big screen w/analog cable and it was picture perfect. Time for Rogers to admit their digital cable is inadequate.

Well it looks much better today, i suppose because the feed is from FOX, not ESPN. Still too much compression.

BTW, it sucks that Rogers also slaps their modified and probably recompressed version on the actual FOX channel (you can see the SN logo on FOX channel). Unfortunately i dont have the west feeds, but it I recall those being left alone maybe someone can compare if there is a SN logo on it.

FOX has a much better feed, 720p 60fps, which is much nicer for sports than the 1080i 30fps that Rogers uses for sportsnet.

I remember back in the day capturing stuff live using the firewire port on my old SA 3250HD, the FOX and ABC stuff was incredible quality, 720p 60fps.

There is a SN logo on the west feed. And I agree, it does look much better today. Gonna be a good game, enjoy.

Exactly, as I noted above, I see that same issues when the US feed is simsubbed by a Canadian one. For some reason when it's not the picture is perfect (Sunday Night Football on NBC for eg) if you switch over to TSN, you'll see it looks like ass in comparison.
