Motorola/Arris sb6183Any idea when the new 16x4 SB6183 will be released to retail? |

4 years? 8 years? 12 years? I do not see Arris as retail friendly. They seem to be just as devoted to allowing proprietary firmware to be loaded on the newest modems in order to secure big cable contracts as Motorola was. They seem quite willing to follow Motorola policy of pushing gateways in retail, while reserving new pure modems for wholesale to cable companies, until the retail market is just too lucrative. |

Re: Motorola/Arris sb6183Here's the response I just received today after asking: Hi Mark,
I received your inquiry below. The SB6183 is estimated to come out late August at all major retail locations.
Thank you,
AMANDA

That is how it should be done. Release the modem to the cable companies and then very soon after that to the general public. Not years later like the SB6141. Arris may be much better at this than I originally thought. Since the Puma chip for 24 down channels and 8 up channels is already available, it will be interesting to see how soon Arris puts that on the retail market. |

Black probably is never going to be for retail anymore if Arris gets their way. From what my contacts in Arris have told me and backed up by cable engineer contacts, Arris only wants white modems to be sold to retail while back is for MSO rental, this way it's easier to identify which is which. There have been issues in the past of inattentive cable techs accidentally taking customer owned modems during visits, and billing issues when a customer starts getting charged a rental fee for owned modems. From what I've gathered even the top and bottom banners on the SB6183 (and other modems using the same UI) match the modem casing (white for retail and black for MSO) |
