Nginx default directory

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 server. I installed nginx and noticed that it is defaulting to /usr/share/nginx/html to serve content. Does anyone know if this is the new directory Linux/Debian/Ubuntu is pushing or is this an nginx thing? I was quite surprised to find that it was not set to /var/www. Of course I know I can set it to any directory I want, I'm just curious if anyone knows where the change comes from.

I think if you don't have any content that's the default served pages.
I forget the directive. I usually use NGINX over apache but on CentOS.
