I'm also seeing ~8 support posts of unspecified size and their footings in the drawing you included. Are they also part of the $6k quote? If so, then that's a great deal. |

Are they using nails, screws or glue? Are they delivering a PDF of the picture, or the actual materials built per that spec? That's a great deal for cedar with nails/screws... |

$6,000 is a fucking bargain. You'd better jump on it before they wise up. It's actually suspiciously low. I'd find out if they are insured and plan on getting permits. I'd never build a deck out of cedar. Been there, done that. PT or composite. The cedar is a haven for boring bees. They'll have the deck ruined in less than 10 years. |

My house has cedar siding with 2x4 cedar trim. They don't seem to bother the siding but seem to love the cedar around the garage door.
After I repainted, it has not been much of a problem. |

Re: [Carpentry] Cost to build new deck?As others here have said, $6K is a Bargain for that, Provided that they will build it not only to those Specifications, but *TO CODE* as well (Meaning that they WILL pull all the necessary local permits, and submit their work to ALL the necessary Inspections)... If they Can't (or Won't) agree to that, then RUN (Don't Walk) Away... -Tursiops_G. |

Re: [Carpentry] Cost to build new deck?$6000 seems very low. You might want to see what the lumber alone costs to get an overview on what's up. The giant lumber and hardware stores should be willing to quote the materials costs. Maybe knock 10 or 20% off that for a contractor's discount to get a ballpark of what the deal is. Hopefully the contractor is of the accountable type. Summer is peak "Travellers" season. » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ir ··· avellersA few words about the bore bees - over the counter aerosols don't work on them. I had an independent pest pro puff some powder into their bores from a squeeze bottle, and after one application, they are all gone. I had at least 3 dozen bore holes treated for under $100. He was on site for less than an hour. I don't know what the magic powder is, but google probably could help there. The 3 or 4 chain pest pros I contacted all wanted to turn it into a multi month / year project and subscription. |

Last year the number I got was $20 a square foot for a cedar deck in JUST materials. That puts materials at $4,800 or so for this deck. I'd estimate the deck to cost about $10,000 so $6,000 is a bargain. |

You could use the free deck designer from lowes to get a full materials list, and then at least you will know how much of that $6k is going to materials. » www.lowes.com/cd_Deck+De ··· 3683095_I agree with others that $6k is so low it almost sounds suspicious. The bees seem to be a real problem for Cedar decks around here. No only do they destroy the lumber, but you also have a bunch of bees flying around your favorite backyard spot. Cedar today isn't the same as it used to be, so a lot of what you read about it no longer applies. It is no longer harvested from old trees. The sapling stuff they use now is much softer and less resistant to insects, rot, etc. |

Today's clapboards will install ok, then an hour or three later they often split from the nail pressure. |

That's a screaming deal... I generally quote $35/sq ft for a cedar faced deck...
So at 240sq ft - I'd quote that at $8400 plus footings. 8 x 10" sonotubes, 48" deep - adds another $1600... That's a 10k deck, IMO. |
