Intermittent DSL drop with SR505n - Firmware or line?I'm getting intermittent DSL drops and want to diagnose them before Teksavvy files a ticket with Bell (putting me on the hook for $100 diagnostic fee). In a TekSavvy direct thread and over the phone, customer service reps have said they can't tell whether it's a line issue, or a modem hardware issue. Modem is a new-from-Teksavvy SmartRG 505N, software version D2.5.0.2014:01:02:15:50:35_4.12L.08.A2pv6F039b.d24m , and has been reset to factory defaults (with the paperclip and power-off), then set in bridge mode with the Teksavvy provided .CFG file. Wondering if any of you could tell from these logs or line stats? I'm running DSLStats 5.0, and it gives the clue that the modem stops responding at the same time as the DSL line drops. Login via command line or the modem webpage doesn't respond for a minute or two, then once it responds, DSL still takes a few minutes more to come back up. Seems like a firmware hiccup to me, unless it's normal for the modem control page to stop responding when the DSL signal is lost?!? said by anthill:I'm running DSLStats 5.0, and it gives the clue that the modem stops responding at the same time as the DSL line drops. Are you sure? Like... If your router has no WAN IP, because the link is dropped, that would stop traffic from getting through to the modem. Also, Windows seems to go into conniptions sometimes when routes get changed, I've never understood exactly what's up--when that happens to me, ping sometimes keeps working, and pinging sometimes 'fixes' Windows. Those things aside, I wouldn't be that surprised by a modem going silent during a retrain. In principle it shouldn't, but it just wouldn't be that surprising. The various firmware versions floating around wouldn't have any effect on what you are experiencing. They don't touch the modem functionality at all. Still possible that your modem is a lemon, I guess.. I can loan out a modem to help explore this possibility |

Hi Charles! You're friends with Pierre Duez, right? Thanks for the reply. My TCP/IP knowledge is pretty thin, but I'm failing to understand why the router losing its WAN IP would lose me access to the modem's admin page. My router runs on 172.32.0.X, and has a firewall rule: ifconfig `nvram get wan_ifname`:0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -o `nvram get wan_ifname` -j MASQUERADE
so that the 192.168.1.X subnet is accessible from my PC. Perhaps something goes on with the router's interface configurations when it loses the WAN IP? But then how to explain being able to reach the modem a few minutes after, despite the modem still showing no DSL link? Appreciate the offer of a loaner modem to narrow down the diagnosis. Want to temporarily swap or do you have one unboxed? |

I figured I knew who it was I didn't pay too close attention to this part of what you said: Login via command line or the modem webpage doesn't respond for a minute or two, then once it responds, DSL still takes a few minutes more to come back up. That might indicate a modem problem. I don't think a simple DSL drop should ever take more than 2 minutes to come back. The SmartRG has had some slow sync issues though.. Nothing is ever simple.. said by anthill:so that the 192.168.1.X subnet is accessible from my PC. Perhaps something goes on with the router's interface configurations when it loses the WAN IP? But then how to explain being able to reach the modem a few minutes after, despite the modem still showing no DSL link? Ya.. I just don't think we can know for sure the modem is not responding in this scenario. If we want to investigate it, you could connect a different computer direct to the modem with a continuous ping of 192.168.1.1 going. Or running another copy of DSLStats, or whatever. I think there is a good chance that other machine never loses connection to the modem. On top of that, even if the modem does hang, I don't think that points to a defective modem especially. Anyway, if you want to borrow a modem, give me a call and we can talk logistics |

I did the sequence of paper clip > Wait 20 seconds for flashing red light > power off > wait 20 seconds > power on.
It definitely reset the configuration... how thoroughly I don't know. |

Spent 20 minutes removing the extra wiring the Bell tech added. I now have a direct wire from the demarc thru the wall to the VDSL splitter terminal blocks. Also opened the demarc box, loosened the connection post bolts, sprayed electrical contact cleaner liberally, and tightened them down again. That's the last of the in-house wiring I can think of. Next, modem, then Bell. What a timesink. As far as I can tell, no change in line stats. adslctl info --stats

So turns out the phone line from the pole to the house was stripped for about 4" by a tensioning clamp. Exposed twisted pair for who knows how many years!
Good to find a hardware problem. |

Thankfully they found it! You could imagine them ignoring the issue.. I assume it has helped? (and let me tell you what I've discovered about disc breaks....) |

I thought it helped, but now I am still getting drops. The really strange thing is that yesterday the DSL link dropped a little before 10:40 AM:

SO STRANGE. We start using the internet at 8 AM, so why doesn't it drop earlier? We keep using the internet after 6:30pm so why doesn't it drop later?
Maybe just coincidence? I had noticed that it tended to drop around 10 in the morning, but hadn't noticed two days in a row with 10:30AM and 6:30PM drops practically synchronized. |

are these logs from your router that does the PPPoE session or the modem? i would check if you're actually losing sync, if the sync looks good then try changing the port you're using on the SmartRG to something other than port 1 if you are.
port 1 seems to have some issues. |

Am definitely losing sync - SR505 "DSL" light flashes, webpage says "line down". |

So the drop times have been:
Sep 25th: 10:40am, 6:28pm Sep 26th: 10:28am, 6:23pm Sep 27th: 10:17am, 6:53pm Today: 10:13am....
Any guesses what the pattern might be? |

Do you have anything in the residence that starts at those times? Such as a furnace or A/C unit. |
|
|
Nope. Neither is running. Hot water tank runs more frequently than that. We aren't cooking at that time of day, and neither is the upstairs neighbor.
I could try putting the modem on a UPS... seems a bit overkill, especially since the modem isn't crashing (the 192.168.1.1 status webpage is still live for the 20 seconds between when the DSL link drops and when the router gives up and un-assigns its WAN IP address). |

What's the latest firmware on the SmartRG? Could be the IPv6 tunneling bug if it's not up to date. |

Yikes.. Except that it was all weekend, I'd say that screams manual network service of some kind. Guy working on your remote, starts shift and messes with it--booting you off--and same at end of shift. It has to have a human in the loop... Dunno. Anyway, I'm supposed to be on holiday, so pretend I wasn't even here |

There's a newer version from Start... not sure why TSI hasn't released it yet (though to be fair, I'm not even sure where it would be if TSI did lol) |

Thanks for the reminder to check. I've updated to 2.5.0.1_4.12L.08.A2pv6F039b.d24m. It seems to have kept the configuration settings... not sure if I should do a factory reset and reconfigure. |

All the firmware update should do is fix the bug and close the TR069 port. Configuration should be unaffected. |

I downloaded Start's version from www.start.ca/files/srupdate a bit earlier this year, are you telling me there is an even NEWER version? Is Teksavvy's latest version with the changelog that Martin posted newer than Starts, or is it the same as Starts but Start has a newer one in the works or what? I'm a little bit confused with all of this firmware stuff, and I just want to have the latest and greatest firmware. |

Not exactly helpful. When searching it appears as though there's been nothing posted for 9 months, it's only after clicking through that it shows that it was updated ~2 weeks ago. For those that want a direct link here it is: » help.teksavvy.com/hc/en- ··· -Upgrade |
