Re: [Networking] Symmetrical Tier Upgrade resulted in lower download speedsNot sure about AccessMAX, but the Tellabs 610 is capable of 50 down but limited to 29 up. See this FAQ about known ONTs in use. » Verizon FiOS FAQ » What are the different models of ONTs?Actiontec Rev.E is fully capale of 50/50. |

Since the ActionMAX 610X is not even listed, all I can do is assume it to have similar specs as the Telllabs 610. Regardless, I don't know what explains my recent massive download speed drop from a consistent 50/20 to a new consistent 20/20 over the past four days except for some Verizon snafu having to do with the new symmetrical crap (that I don't give a shit about). Nothing has changed on my side.
Somebody from Verizon is supposed to be out to my house on Friday. Should I assume they will figure it out or am I going to be screwed for awhile? |

The magic term to tell the is you need your cross-connect rebuilt . This usually corrects provisioning issues |

Do I call Verizon support back and tell them that or is that what I mention to the tech that arrives Friday? |

Just got off the phone with Verizon again. I told the person on the phone what you said that "it was recommended by a Verizon tech to have my cross-connect rebuilt." I asked the tech if that meant anything to him and he did a "kill/rebulid data connection." I don't know if that's what you meant or if that is the same thing. Either way, unfortunately, the "kill/rebulid data connection" did not achieve anything as I am still getting only 20/20. |

The super nice Verizon tech was here today and he hard reset the Actiontec router which restored my 50/20 speed.
Interestingly, prior to the hard reset, when he hooked his Verizon tablet up to the Actiontec router and ran the dedicated speed test, he was getting the correct 50/20, whereas all four of my devices were still getting only 20/20. Apparently, the dedicated speed test app on that tablet bypasses certain aspects of the router as it was able to achieve 50/20 before the hard reset. After the hard reset, all my my equipment was back to 50/20.
As to why this happened in the first place, I do not know, but the hard reset did work. I thank whomever may have read my original post (if anyone) and was interested. Maybe this info may help you guys troubleshoot in the future! |

Okay, so this is what I figured out based on the hard reset and then reloading my config...
My particular speed decrease was due to something I did.
I recently added a simple rule to the parental controls of the Actiontec router which was designed to block most Android ads by blocking access to the web addresses most of those ads come from. It was made specific to the mac addresses of my Android devices. Apparently, that did not matter as it affected all of my devices.
When I made the rule, the router said, and I quote, "Enabling Parental Control requires extra processing power to provide the required inspection for your network and will contribute slight performance impacts." I figured okay, slight performance impact. Big deal.
LOL.. It was a big deal. Apparently a 60% speed decrease is considered a "slight performance impact." I guess that as old as this MI424WR-GEN2 Rev E is, they never considered 50 megabit downloads at the time. Maybe if I had only 5, 10 or 20 megabits, there wouldn't be as great an impact as a percentage of the total speed.
So in summary, tested and retested... With the parental control rule in, 20/20. With the parental control rule removed, 50/20.
Wow.
I hope this info, as embarassing to me as it is, may help you guys in the future.
Two takeaways:
1. Don't use parental control rules on these routers! Needless to say, the rule is removed. I'll take the ads with extra ads, thank you.
2. As I should have known from my many years of IT experience, the problem is almost always something that changed recently, even if you consider it to be too minor to matter. |
