said by horacebork:1. 30 mbps is top speed for docsis 2. does that mean 30 up *and* down? in other words, would i get my 10 up with my current modem?
Your modem
technically supports 38Mbps/27Mbps or 38Mbps/9Mbps (if using older D1.1 upload channels), but you will not see more than 20/2 most likely. They probably won't push the new configuration file to a D2 modem, so you'll keep your existing speeds.
said by horacebork:2. would the docsis 2 modem even work under docsis 3 upgrade?
It will continue to work, but at your old speeds.
said by horacebork:3. would *any* docsis 3 modem work with twc, or only those on their modem list? i have read mixed reports.
I'll use this word again...
technically any D3 modem will work, but getting it registered is a crap shoot. Some CSRs don't care and will activate anything, some make sure it's on the approved list, etc. Even if you get it activated, they may not push the higher speed configuration files to your modem because it's not on the approved list. There's been at least one report of somebody not getting the 200+Mbps tiers on their "unsupported" modem. If you want the least amount of headaches, play it safe and get one from the approved list.
To add one more anecdote to the many existing.. I purchased a Cisco DPC3008 modem. If I'm not mistaken, the 3000 (not the 3008, but they're basically the same) was on TWC's list some time ago but is not any longer. TWC in Los Angeles had no problem activating it - didn't even ask for the model number. YMMV.
said by horacebork:4. which doc3 modem to get? i look at amazon 1-star ratings for 'consistency'. in other words, do the 1-star ratings complain about the same thing over and over, or are they all over the map? the 1-star ratings for any modem with over 100 ratings are *very* consistent: modem failure, rebooting, bricked, etc.
They're all basically the same, IMO. Get whatever is cheapest. Most 1-star reviews for modems are people that don't know what they're doing or how to properly diagnose issues. If the prices are close, go for the "brand name" (Motorola/Arris). There's a higher chance it'll be supported well into the future.
