what would cause the cable tv box to once in awhile reset on it's own?

Depending on the time, it could be due to software updates just like Comcast modems.

Depending on the time of day that this is happening, you may also want to check the power going into the box. Your power may be dirty and it's just enough to reset your cable box but not enough to affect other electronics or appliances in your house. You should at the least, put your cable box on a surge protector and at most, get a small UPS.

if the problem is once in a while, overnight, it is probably a firmware/software update. If the problem is random and more frequent than you expect, it's your power.
