[DSL] Does NID have to be grounded?

New NID box - old ground wire just hangs now and doesn't go into NID
Wondering if anybody knows.

Bell installed a new NID at my house.

The old box had three cables:

- One black cable from Bell that went into the ground.
- One black cable that is buried for about 20 feet and then goes into the house to the wiring board.
- One white cable that was wired to the central ground post on the old box, this is buried for about 20 feet and then goes into the house next to the black cable - not sure where it goes inside the house.

The new NID has just the two black cables - the white cable that used to ground is now cut.

Does this matter?

Where does the new black cable with the orange tag on it go? As that is the new ground wire.

new grounding connection
I've found it

It goes up instead of down - and is attached to the top of the electric meter.

Duh!

The old (disconnected) white ground cable runs under the ground and into the house - where it is clamped to a copper braid attached to the electrical panel.

I'm assuming I can remove that old white ground cable from running into the house; since it doesn't appear to be hooked up to anything outside.

Yes it should be grounded otherwise the protector does not work. The protector is just two high ohm (high resistance) resistors or blocks of carbon which shut excess power to ground should your phone line be accidentally energized by high voltage.

Ah, NM you have posted a follow up, sure remove the old one if you want, its no longer in use.

Yea, that's the new way that the grounds are being done.
