[Pets] Can anyone name this bird? While we wait for me to get around to the rest of the robin videos, just happened to see this little guy in my back yard yesterday. Poor quality because he was so close I didn't want to spook him by trying to open the screen door.

I don't remember ever seeing this one and it isn't on my list of Seattle back yard birds.

I'll look at the videos again, but I don't remember seeing red, but your photo may be a male and I might have seen a female. Here is a northern flicker. » wdfw.wa.gov/living/woodp ··· ers.html |

Hide your deck from them as they are a variety of woodpeckers. Here are their sounds: » www.allaboutbirds.org/gu ··· r/soundsI would assume the sounds are very similar to the Northern Flicker. |

Definitely just many shades of brown and gray.
It attracted my attention because of the bobbing in the grass for food. I don't remember seeing a bird to that before. The link I just gave says flickers frequently feed on the ground. |

Yes, I know flickers are often listed in the woodpecker family. So far I'm not hearing her exhibiting that behavior. Around here I sometimes have to chase off woodpeckers in the spring, but this one seems happy enough with the ground feeding for now, thankfully. |

Thanks, sashie. She wasn't making any sounds when I saw her, but I will listen for her.
Your photo looks very much like her. |

Maybe a Gilded Flicker. Here is a link that shows no red on the bird at all. » avesphoto.com/website/na ··· IL-1.htm |

Looking back and forth between sashie's photo of the (female) Northern Flicker, your Gilded Flicker and my videos, they all look very similar. Your Gilded Flicker looks most like my little bird, I think, because of the gray on the neck?
Color is hard, though. I have learned cameras (especially my MBP web camera) can lie about the colors. In this case, my camera (recommended by our very own chaotic kitty) seems to have ignored my amateur status and captured the colors just as I saw them. Your photo and sashie's were most likely done by real photographers, so I'm trusting the color more |

However, this article shows that gray on the Northern Flicker and the article indicates the Gilded Flicker is not likely to be found in this part of the country. » birdvancouver.com/b_nort ··· ker.html |

This, about the Northern Flicker, explains why I keep chasing woodpecker sounding birds away from a metal gutter at the corner of my house each spring. » birdvancouver.com/b_nort ··· ker.html Many people notice flickers in the spring when their loud drumming on metal objects as a form of communication and territory defense draws attention. This drumming can carry for distances up to almost a mile. |

I believe I'll pass on that, thanks. When they do this it is early in the morning just outside my bedroom window. I just sleep walk to the window, open and close it a bit aggressively and they fly away for that morning. |

I'd like to help you find a name for your bird but it would really help if you made up your mind whether it is a "he" or a "she" ? In the meantime, here are some gender neutral suggestions: Charlie, Jamie, Kim. Do you like any of those ? |
