Are you talking about the gray box with the site address that flashes briefly ?

This add on seems to do the trick. It adds a status bar that you can right click on and disable. At the very least, it has many options that you can configure in it.

OR, you could try PaleMoon.

PM's status display is disabled by default, but they have a dedicated settings page for enabling and configuring it for various behaviours, including like FireFox's.

One method would be to create a userChome.css file in your profile chrome folder. You may have to create the folder too.

This would be the contents of userChrome.css
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

 /* Remove the statuspanel display */
statuspanel {display: none !important;}

I actually consider that a security feature. Why? It lets me see were links point too.

Absolutely true !

And as long as I do not have to have a full-time bar down there, I'm happy with a 'bubble' which appears when needed.

Of course, FireFox COULD add a config menu like PM has for this feature.

Of course! Those darn Firefox developers. Why didn't they think of this! ;)

One could also make it less intrusive by making it transparent.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

*/ Make the statuspanel transparent. */
.statuspanel-label[value=""] {display: none !important;}
.statuspanel-label:not([value=""]){opacity: 1 !important;
-moz-transition-property: opacity: 0 !important;
-moz-transition-delay: 2000ms !important;}
#main-window[sizemode="normal"]:not([inFullscreen])
.statuspanel-inner{margin: 0 1px !important;}
.statuspanel-label {color: Windows Text !important;
border-color: Transparent !important;
background: Transparent !important;}
