Buying a Used Modem

What should i look for when buying a used modem. I'm told that it was used with Vmedia i'm with Start. So i believe the firmware would be correct. Any advise?

What is the make and model number? Is it on Start's approved modem list?

Check the firmware anyway. The common old firmware is 2.31, and it works fine. Just that if you ever need service, they'll refuse. So, the seller might not even know that it is wrong, but it still might be wrong.

You need to have ongoing contact with the seller, the seller may have to contact their original ISP again to have the modem cleared. Even then, Rogers may fail to release the modem, and you need the seller to agree to refund or exchange the unit.

It typically takes a full month for a modem to become available again, I think. Personally, I leave them on the shelf for much longer than that before trying with a new customer.

It's all over the place. There are some inventory issues, new models coming..

Fair enough.

But take seriously every caution raised by Teddy.

All it takes is one complication, and there goes your saving/sanity !

thanks for the advise. so far everything is going good. the seller contacted vmedia to let them know he sold it. The firmware checks out. now just waiting for start and rogers to add it to my account. which i'm not in a big hurry since i already paid for the month of the rental.
