[iPhone] Use old IPhone as a "wifi" only device?

Is it possible to Use an old (or any) IPhone as a "wifi" only device on my own network, without registering as a phone, or paying a phone bill?

Do I have to be the owner of the new phone to use the old one this way?
If a person has never used itunes, will they need to just install it?
and thanks for all your help.

No. If you don't have a SIM or a second phone, you can use the old phone just fine.

Possibly not, but it depends on how (or if) you want to put content (songs, movies, etc) on the iPhone.

I understand that now. I think he just needs it as a wi-fi device for work, no music or video.
thanks

Think of it as iPod touch

I used to have an android phone while waiting for Verizon to get the iPhone.

I had a couple of spendy apps on the droid that I rarely use but are handy when I need them.
I would dig the droid out of truck console and use the apps without cell service enabled on phone.

Absolutely. My wife uses her old iPhone 4 as her bedside alarm clock... ...and for her FitBit app, weather, etc.

Sure. I have an iPhone4 that I use at the gym for music. Doesn't have a sim card in it. Works fine.

Our daughter has a 4S that for 2-3 days was exactly what you're asking about. She could do just about anything on it except make phone calls (or text non-iPhone users - well, she couldalso do that if we installed one of those free-text-over-WiFi apps). I later activated it on TING.
