(not at all sure where to post this) Fair price 4 pc maintenance?

Don't usually do work on anyone but me and my brother's computers, but my Aunt asked me to update all the stuff on her computer(windows updates, drivers, ect and probably throw MSE and maleware bytes on it) so I've no idea what a fair price to charge is. Normally I wouldn't charge family, but shes all "If it was anyone else I'd be paying them." Anyone have any suggestions on a fair price?

I charge $89.99 to do it remotely or if the computer comes to me. If I have to make a house call, it's $129.99.

But I don't charge family. (With the exception of one in-law who just won't give up on free porn sites. He gets charged full price)

Tell them that they can buy you lunch, and if they've helped you before with things like watching your kids/etc you're not going to accept their money. Maybe they could watch your kids so you, and the wife can have a date night, etc..

This. But if she insists on a monetary payment then I would charge $35.00 then put it aside and buy her a birthday, Christmas gift around $35.00 or so. Everyone is happy then.

Thats probably what I'm gonna do. I'm not exactly fond of charging family, heck I literally just sat down from installing a dvd burner in my brother's pc, but shes just one of those people that feel like they have to pay for some reason.

Side note: Bitdefender Free Edition tested pretty high on detection and low on false positives. You might want to get that instead of MSE.

This^^

When you're going over to family's place, you're doing something helpful, but you're not necessarily working full time, so I'd tell her to get a couple of beers, and put something on the barbecue while you fix her computer.

I'm amazed this still happens in this day and age. You could direct him to a legit free site and call it a day.

Since you say you haven't done much work on other people's computers (except your brother), you have not ran the gambit of the dumb things people do.

Imagine how people act about [insert a topic]. Then imagine what happens when they [insert a search engine] and read on some forum from 1990 about how to fix a computer because they think it applies. Most computer problem exist between the keyboard and chair.

More than once I've been asked to look at a computer, and asked them to do simple things like plug in their keyboard as it wasn't working, only to have to plug in their keyboard for them. I have a policy that I will stop helping people, even if they are family, or a friend. If their porn habit, and gulibility keeps getting them infected I tell them since they were wasting my time they can just use the restore partition/reinstall the os themselves, maybe they'll learn how much of a pain it is to clean a computer so they'll stop being ignorant.

Go on your local CL see what people are charging on there... charge around that...

This whole "I don't charge family" is stupid, just charge going rate, and PAY going rate when you need something, works WAY better than IOU, UOM, blah blah, keeping track in your head of who owes what... whos ahead whos behind. Then that one time you need something, and no one "can" do it, you tally up "I did this, that, this, and I can't even get this done" blah blah...

I have very few people or times where I go off the "no charge" system.

I charge everyone going rate, and I tell them to charge me going rate.

Greetings,

I got paid a big dish of baked lasagna once, yummy!

However, it depends on the OS. If it's still XP, I usually suggest they save the money and buy a new computer from Walmart. It's all a FB/email/web user really needs now days.

Or a paysite... would probably still be cheaper than paying someone to clean it up every 3 months, no?

I'd have reservations about giving my credit card to any porn site, but even so I'm surprised that they weren't able to find a porn site that both offers free content, and is safe virus wise. PH comes to mind and I'm surprised everyone hasn't heard about that.

Don't blame the user for uninstalling the Intel HD 3000 driver, my dads' former HP DM4 notebook self-ran the HP Update tool it uninstalled the wifi & Intel IGP driver then rebooted and failed to auto-install script itself upon reboot... OEM update utilities aren't always smart.

Fair price is either wine or food, if you'll be spending a day or two(ex: clean install, updates and reinstall software) $100. Keep in mind get a good idea of what kind of hardware mess you may need to deal with besides software, I've seen PCs with busted USB ports/PS2 port(s), system instability due to a clogged HSF/dying PSU & a failing HDD squealing like a pig
Any computer older than 3yrs I don't touch, chances are if the crap hits the fan they'll be asking why/what did you do...

Just put them on Ubuntu
it can do many things that those people want to do.
