Ubuntu issue driving me NUTS!!

Fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 on a iMac using latest version of Parallels, but I can't install or update any software through the Ubuntu Software Center! It either tells me that I don't have an internet connection, which I do, because I can surf the web perfectly....or tells me something like "This requires installing packages from unauthenticated sources." I did a google search, and this seems to be a common problem...tried some of the solutions that the links suggested, with no results....anyone else have this issue?

You usually have to install some type of Guest Additions or Tools into the guest (your Ubuntu install) for everything to work. Since Parallels is payware you can give them a call for help.

Ubuntu issues always drove me nuts, hence why I do not use it. Anyways, I do know what your issues possibly are. You need to look at the urls for the unauthenticated packages then go to their page to find out where they keep their GPG keys. Wget the key then use the apt-key command. Then do an apt-get update. Some repositories have a keyring, so you might do an apt-cache search keyring then install it, followed by an apt-get update. So either your repositories changed keys(happened to me on Debian Jessie) or you never fetched them. As to the no connection, make sure the repo did not change url or the mirror isn't offline. I recently had to change mirrors for that exact reason due to using one from a nearby university that stopped providing a mirror without any warning.

Here ya go. Saves me some typing on my tablet »naveenubuntu.blogspot.co ··· ntu.html.

This will work if the failed repositories are Ubuntu ones. If they are third party, they should have a url for their GPG key.

Thanks for the reply....but that didn't do anything either, really starting to get frustrating! @rexbinary, I do have the tools installed....everything works perfectly except getting stuff from the Software Center....Someone suggested installing Synaptics, but I can't because it wont let me download it! Thanks anyway, I'll do some more searching around.

Open a terminal, and then sudo apt-get install synaptic
Enter your password and it should install without issue, then you can use it to install whatever you are looking for.

Looks like raring is your problem. Not seeing that anywhere in »us.archive.ubuntu.com/ub ··· u/dists/

Ah... 13.04 is EOL, repos are gone.

The .10s are LTS, the .04s you need to upgrade. So you should install 13.10 or 14.04

Your distribution is significantly out of date, is no longer receiving errata updates, and is considered end of life by Ubuntu on Jan 27 2014 - »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ub ··· Releases

From a security aspect, as well as continued support, I would recommend that you consider doing a dist-upgrade (or use their python tool) to a currently supported distribution version. Personally, my preference has always been Ubuntu's LTS releases due to the long term support and elimination of the need for a "rolling" style distribution upgrade process.

Hope this helps!

Ubuntu 13.04 end of lifecycle was January 27, 2014. You need to go with 14.04.

Try changing the URL's in /etc/apt/sources.list to

http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

I actually just threw the towel in, and downloaded VirtualBox, and installed Ubuntu 14.04, and everything is good now...I had constant crashes running 14.04 in Parallels, so hence the installation of VirtualBox.....thanks for the help all...much appreciated.

This is an LTS release as well, so you're good until 2019.
