use power supply without a motherboardI have an extra case that I would like to put 20 hard drives in. I would also like to have a dedicated power supply for this case the case will not have a motherboard it will only house drives and the power supply. So I need to be able to run the power supply without having to connect it to a motherboard. According to the link I can do the paper clip trick in order to get the power supply to run. So has anyone here done this and did you damage the power supply over time? I ask because this system would rarely be powered off. » aphnetworks.com/tutorial ··· ip_trick |

I've use it to jump a power supply for testing purposes but never full time.
That said, I can't think of any reason why it would be damaging to the power supply. |

I have used a PSU with the blue wire shorted to ground (same as paperclip trick) for over 4 years to power some 12V equipment, no adverse effects. |

Same here. Jumping those two pins won't hurt it at all. I would suggest a single rail unit if the drives are the only thing being powered. |

If you want something that looks nice FrozenCPU makes a jumper. You could also splice the wire on the jumper to a switch so you could turn the HDDs off when the main computer is off. |

They make good +5V and +12V supplies for other projects - lots of current. |
