VPN legality in CanadaLast year I was really put off with the whole Bell scanning all of you usage to sell to advertisers and I planned to setup a VPN for my entire home » mobilesyrup.com/2013/10/ ··· ted-ads/lo and behold I had some free time and finally did it, works great. But I cannot find any definitive answers about VPN use in Canada. The concern at the back of my mind is being flagged as all my traffic is encrypted and then finding out I am doing something illegal. |

Nothing illegal about VPN's .... never has been. |

If that was the case, then my use of VPN to connect to my work LAN from home would be deemed illegal, as it is encrypted traffic. As Maynard has stated, the use of VPN's has never been considered illegal, nor should it be. |

There is nothing illegal about using a VPN or encryption in Canada.
Some people do however use a VPN as a tool to hide their trail when they're doing something illegal, but that's a whole other question.
There are plenty of legitimate uses for VPNs and encryption. |

Thanks for the information.
I have used a VPN client for work for years.
I was more concerned with encrypting ALL my traffic and it raising some kind of flags.
This was just a fun project for me, I care more about Bell making a profit off my usage patterns than I do about them snooping on my kids obsessive Youtube habits ; ) |

Didn't this only apply to Bell's MOBILE service, not their fixed line service? |

Lawyer: "Some people wear hats, sunglasses, colour/grow/cut their hair, and grow/shave off moustaches (women included) to change the way they look - for both vanity & criminal intent reasons." Cop (or Conservatard): "Let's arrest everyone who cuts their hair - it's a clear sign of criminal intent." |

said by Garneac:Does setting up a VPN reduce download speeds in any way? as others have mentioned, it depends the VPN server's CPU and VPN type (PPTP is very slow). With connection speeds getting faster too it's a lot harder for a shared VPN server to handle so many connections. The location of the VPN server (latency and path) can will also affect your throughput and in-game ping. as for hiding your identity, I believe Canadian VPN providers and US ones are technically supposed to keep logs for a reasonable time just like any ISP would in case of a warrant. |

There is no such logging requirement. Some providers will log connection time, but it's virtually impossible to log more details than that. |

I really don't care about vpn's, but I believe the privacy question is useless anyways. |
