Old Mac Pro connectivity problem
My customer has an older MP that can get an IP from the modem but can not get out.
He brought me his modem & works for me.
I am an Exede satellite internet dealer and I can use a tool to view his connection remotely.
It shows he doesn't have anything in the ethernet port, yet the port light comes on on the modem and he gets an IP.
He has swapped patch cords.
Been working fine until one day nothing.
No changes or updates just before falling off the net.
He lives way out in boonies so I suggested he buy a USB ethernet adapter to take home.
Or get a wifi router and a USB wifi adapter.
He was undecided when he left.
What is the IP address, Subnet Mask and Router address he is receiving? I have seen issues with Satellite providers in the past where the Router is outside the range within the subnet and so they can't get internet access.
Fortunately I still had my cmd window up.
The IP was 172.242.55.xx
He has had no router in loop, straight off the modem.
I got 18.6 down & 5.2 up on my pc
I don't understand your comment about a router could be outside range of subnet

Mac Pro has two ethernet ports. have him try the other port.
I just passed it along to him

Also make sure both cards are not set to the same ip range. That can confuse routing as the computer would not know where to send packets.

Let me give you an example using your numbers.
The important bit in this case is the 3rd octet. Your's is 55 and the router is 48. If you're subnet mask was 255.255.255.0 your computer would not be able to reach the router because it is being masked and outside the range of addresses it can see. That is the role of the subnet mask. However, your setup there looks fine, so that is not the issue.
I never have put sufficient effort into really getting my head around subneting.
I have picked up enough to get me thru what needs to get done.
I see the ip mismatch.
All I can say for sure, is it worked that way.
He did call back to report the second port works but the one he/we thought was the only one, still didn't work.
