Software Update and Verizon FIOS

None of my computers are able to update via software update. This has been a problem for a few months. I have the Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2.

In the App Store, I click update and then it says the following:

'Installing - Calculating' and then '0 bytes of 53.8 MB' and it just sits there until it fails. I am able to download apps from the store.

If I set iPhone to personal hotspot mode, the download will work.

I found one similar problem without a solution in the Verizon support forum.

Any ideas?

I've never experienced that issue on FiOS, both with my previous Rev F router and the current Rev I router. I wish I had a suggestion for you...

I have to go to Apple website and download the file and install from there.

Maybe this has something to deal with it

So I ran SU and it shows that it was installed. I opened Safari and it shows the old version and SU now shows the update is available and it has been installed.

Maybe that is the cause of the following although it has been going on for about one month.

Thanks for your help. That is the thread I found last night. I tried what they suggested and the only thing I was able to do was make email stop working. I reset the router to factory setting and am back at square one.

are you comfortable performing a packet capture (using wireshark or tcpdump) on your system?

i'm curious to see the packet flow between your device and 'teh interwebs' -- to see if there is something to be gleaned there.

I'll look into wireshark.

I remembered that I am also not able to run the latest updates from Microsoft for Word etc.

that is incredibly odd.

if you get wireshark working -- start the capture with as little in the background as possible. then start the update and let it fail. then if you can upload the .pcap, we can analyze what is going on.

I got it going but had a lot running in the background. I'm going to close everything and give it another go. Does the color of the highlighted text mean anything? I had a lot of black, red, and yellow.

iirc -- its mostly different packet types.
like i said -- keep background network traffic to a minimum. that will make it easier to find the packets.

By any chance, did you try setting your FiOS router's configuration to factory default just in case something snuck in there?

I have. I used namebench and supposedly found one that is 172% faster. This was done in the last week.

from your packet capture -- i'm guessing that your host is 192.168.1.7. what is 192.168.1.6?

i'm seeing a lot of tcp retransmissions, duplicate ack's, and finally tcp rst packets after a given number of retrans.

very odd, really. i'm trying to dig a little deeper into this -- but its harder since apple uses cdn peers to distribute updates.

i'll keep poking around.

I use a similar Actiontec and have never had an issue.

Did you try hooking the Mac up directly to your FiOS and bypassing the router?

Wonder if the AT is on the way out ...?

Wired or wireless to the AT?

Mine worked fine for about two years. My desktop is wired and the laptops are wireless. Problem occurs on both.

I have not bypassed the router. Currently reading this 11 page thread regarding that option.

If you do decide to bypass the router to test things out, be sure to remember to release the router's IP before you switch it out and plug your Mac directly into the ONT. If you don't, you'll be in for a very long wait for connectivity.
