More spams these days?

Has anyone noticed more spams than usual these days? Or is it just me (multiple accounts and providers with SpamAssassin, EarthLink's SpamBlocker, etc.)?

Thank you in advance.

I have not noticed a significant increase.

If there is an increase, it might just be an economic factor. As the economy improves, there is more money to be spent of marketing, including on spam.

my gauge is the number of spams in my spam folder on gmail. Since spams get automatically deleted after 30 days, we can easily calculate the 30 day average. A long time ago, the number was several hundred, but over the past year it has dropped down to about 60, (or about 2/day). In the last few weeks there was a significant uptick and I am now back at 120. Most new spams seems to be from a single outfit: typical pattern is an all uppercase obfuscated title starting with "FW:" with my e-mail name appended or prepended in lower case (e.g. "FW: S_A F E _&_..F A-S T -- P E_N I_S..--_E..N_L A_R..G-E_M..E_N..T.."), they contain some weird large formatted and colored text and an html attachment. The spam filter gets them all. So, yes, at least for me the spam has about doubled over the last few weeks.

Depends, previous to this 30 day period I was at 1-2/week. Start of the month jumped to 13/day, then 183/day the following two weeks, this week is 4/day so far. Spam filters seem to be doing their job though.

Yes I have noticed more spam especially these past few days. There was a lull for a while when I thought they were stopping. I'm not much good at these spam filters. I wonder if they knew my age would they stop flooding me with penis enlargement emails.

To be honest, I rarely pay attention in that my rules are such that most of it goes immediately into a Spam folder where I let it be automatically deleted every 60 days. Taking my Gmail account as one that I can easily check, so far this month, I have recieved 51 Spam emails. Taking into account that many of them are political adverts, I would say that so far, I am getting more than I used to. And many are also for enlarging my penis! In my private account(s), my rule sets have mostly worked and I am noting very few.

I'm seeing a decided drop. Yahoo webmail SPAM box.
Been that way for a good while now.
Gmail, can't say, cause I've never looked in its SPAM box.

Also a HUGE decrease in SPAM posts on a couple websites I deal with.
Don't know why? Changes in the board, phpbb, or maybe its no longer profitable to pay someone to SPAM websites?

As always, it's mainly the constant war between the spammers and the filters. The spammers find a hole in a filter, and it can take a few days to be corrected. Or the filter is adjusted to simplify a few things to reduce load on servers, and some spam makes it through until there is further fine tuning.

Yes, in the past day or 2 I've seen a significant increase in what makes it through my spam filter.

There are better ways than spam filters.

I've definitely noticed it. Although I am on AT&T U-Verse, I have an old Earthlink email address I have kept as my main one since I signed up with them back in 1999.

In the last few months the amount of spam that it has blocked has increased about tenfold, and more of it is landing in my inbox. I have been getting phishes and 419s in there, on average about 3-4 a week. Before I was rarely getting any spam at all in there.

In a way this is good for me because I recently dropped all email accounts and setup my own email server like the old days. My spam filter is still in training and miraculously has already logged some hits though not many yet. This will help me train it faster My email accounts I been migrating from had a ten fold increase in spam with a fair bit getting through to my rarely used gmail at that point. My previously very used safe-mail had about a 100% filter rate. My spam filter in training-so far so good but has yet to get slammed yet. I did see a fair amount of penis enlargement ads in the caught spam....talk about untargeted random marketing-can't enlarge something I don't have lol

I don't get any in my Road Runner (TWC legacy) addresses. The only one I get spam in is dslr and dslr USED TO HAVE EXCELLENT SPAM BLOCK BUT NOT IN A LONG WHILE. I don't complain though because I know Justin wanted to get rid of dslr mail and didn't just because those of us who have it would have been really upset to lose it. So, I am grateful to just have dslr mail 'warts" and all. So, I put up with the Monday through Friday spam (never on the weekend...not just "Never on Sunday"). I get several a day not more or less recently. They are usually pretending to be from DrOz or other "health" oriented websites and most seem to think I am fat (I weigh 103 pounds) and offer weight loss gimmicks or some think I need Viagra!

I train Thunderbird and it diverts many to the spam folder with my never seeing them but then there will be a new spate which go to the inbox and I have to train TB on them. I usually get TWO of each message sent and arrived at exactly the same time. I don't know if the spammer is doing that deliberately or if dslr mail is messing up or what.

Did you mean spam making it's way through filters to your inbox or just spam that gets filtered to a junk folder/trash?

If you meant spam evading detection and ending up in my inbox I haven't seen any getting through and if you meant spam that's detected and been filtered to trash, I would say it's the same as usual. These things tend to ebb and flow, up and down with out any rhythm or reason. With good filters set up you should never* see any spam.

*The one odd off might very infrequently slip through but that would be the exception rather than the rule

"Greylisting is a new weapon to use against spam in this great war being waged upon it. With this new shielding method, by which you may block out huge amounts of spam, you are sure to please your email clients!

In name, as well as operation, greylisting is related to whitelisting and blacklisting. What happen is that each time a given mailbox receives an email from an unknown contact (ip), that mail is rejected with a "try again later"-message (This happens at the SMTP layer and is transparent to the end user). This, in the short run, means that all mail gets delayed at least until the sender tries again - but this is where spam loses out! Most spam is not sent out using RFC compliant MTAs; the spamming software will not try again later."

Hmm single outfit that likely has a bot net sending out the spam. Could be fun to try and kill the botnet for them lol. Might be like a local news report here a few years back (many years 99 2001) "noticed a marked decrease in a specific type of spam"

One of my older throw away accounts gets pinged with waves of spam every now and again.

Other than Gmail being read by Google, while in transit and under composition - not much has changed on my end.

I have my own domain(s). Over the last 2 weeks, I have been inundated with spam email making it through Spamassasin.
I used to have 1 or 2 per day sneak through. Now it's scores to hundreds.
I've left all the crap in my spambox and restarted hoping that SA-learn will come through and start blocking again. It "seems" to be working, as I only had about 10 today (so far).

Further to my post above I am in complete agreement with Mele20 in regard to my highly thought off dslr email address. So maybe it's just not my fault I receive a lot of spam in my dslr address.

I've actually started noticing more spams on my very private emails as well ever since I installed Avast on my iMac, just removed it after 2 months of usage. Also, read Avast sells your privacy so maybe thats why too. Going to play with Avira and see if it changes.

The amount of Spam you get isn't dependant on the AV your running but it's fun to play with different software.
