[Windows] Confirmed KB2982791 Windows 8.1 fails to boot

Anybody seeing this? KB2982791 updated yesterday for me in 8.1 and my workstation failed to boot into windows displaying a Black Screen of Death (no error codes).
System restored prior to the updates fixed it. We revoked the KB in our WSUS server after some Googling indicated others were having the same problem and the constant being KB2982791.

looks like the update is about fonts. is it really that important? i wonder how it breaks the system.

I think they added the Russian Ruble (sp) character and it wasn't being interpreted correctly or something along those lines. Yeah, we noticed it was a dumb-ish update but it seems to have broken four of our 8.1 lab workstations.

Edit: I went one by one for each KB update and it killed on that one.

Thanks for the heads up, exocet_cm.

It mentions fonts outside the default directory, but it appears to update the following files:

Gdi32.dll 6.3.9600.17246 1,336,624 07-Aug-2014 02:12 x64
Win32k.ptxml Not Applicable 4,213 22-Aug-2013 06:44 Not Applicable
Win32k.sys 6.3.9600.17250 4,148,224 06-Aug-2014 22:39 x64
Gdi32.dll 6.3.9600.17246 1,064,448 02-Aug-2014 03:56 x86

Hello,

I had the same problem on two computers, both win7 64bits.

I could solve it by booting from a DVD and removing the following file:

c:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT

For sake of completeness, I first removed the files

c:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\FontCache3.0.0.0.dat

c:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\FontCache-System.dat

But that didn't solve the problem. Then I removed the file I mentioned first. So, in the end all 3 files were removed, but I guess the first one is the culprit.
