[iPhone] iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.6

My child just got an unlocked GSM iPhone 3GS,

which uses a SIM card from an MVNO that uses AT&T's towers.

Under the iMessage setting,

is the "Receive At" supposed to show only an email address,

or also the iPhone's phone number?

On my child's iPhone, it shows only the email address, not the iPhone's phone number.

My spouse's iPhone 5, from work, on Verizon's network, runs iOS 7.1.2.

Its iMessage "Receive At" shows both the iPhone's phone number and the email address.

Is there something else that needs to be done for the iPhone 3GS
to also include the iPhone's phone number under iMessage?

Thank you.

Try removing the SIM card and reinserting it while the phone is on. That should force it to retry the iMessage activation.

However, some carriers do not support the activation required to use your phone number with iMessage / FaceTime. Which MVNO is it?

I configured the iPhone according to the following:

Now I see the phone number there.
