Is Netflix down for anyone else?

Since yesterday, I haven't been able to stream Netflix on either on my two TiVo HD's or on my Roku HD.

Is anyone else having issues?

My Netflix is perfect on multiple platforms. It's better than it has been for years!

What exactly are you seeing? Have you tried connecting using a web browser?

When I try to play Netflix on my Tivo (either of them), the screen goes black for about 5 minutes then simply says there has been an error with Netflix. My Roku gives the error that the title is not available at this time. Doesn't matter what I try to play.

Accessing via android app or web browser works fine.

It seems to also be affecting the west coast, over here in the Los Angeles County area. I'm gonna give my trusty vpn a try, and will report back if that fixes it for me.

No problems for me in Silver Spring, MD. I use Rokus and Fire TV. I've read about the problems but never experienced any here.

I am in LA also and all is fine. I connect via IPv4 on my PC. Remember, Netflix assigns the server and routing based on the client. It's not a Verizon issue.

I talked to Netflix support and, big surprise, they are blaming Verizon.

"you will need to contact your ISP for this, I'm sure it wont take long they will just need to check if there is any blocks to the Netflix servers or refresh your network settings and signal."

Well since Netflix controls the stream based on client in use, and your service works on Android and web browsers with no issues, it clearly isn't and ISP issue. Just for grins can you sign out and then sign back into Netflix on your Roku or Tivo? Or is there a way to "reset" the apps on those devices? I just had an issue with the Windows 8 app (wasn't getting the same 5800kbps streaming rate as with IE even though I was hitting the same server with the same routing). I was told to uninstall the Windows 8 app and then reinstall it. That fixed the problem initially, but it came back.

By the way I think that Netflix chat is a better way of getting help than calling.

Also, fire up the web browser, determine the server being accessed, and then do a trace route to it to see if you get a direct connection yet in your area.

I did contact them via chat. The quote I pasted was right out of the chat log.

It looks like I'm connecting to ipv4_1.cxl0.c029.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net

ping times are in the 12ms range

Suggest a trace to the server to confirm the connection routing.

Netflix wouldn't load up for me a few days ago. I've seen sporadic issues with some web sites on and off since then. It may be related to the routing failures that have started occurring with routes using older devices that have hit their table limits.

You can read more about it here: »arstechnica.com/security ··· eliable/

I'm not really sure what was going on, but it's working now. This is the first time I've been able to stream Netflix on my TiVo since Thursday.

Yeah, if indeed it is the BGP router issue related then the path was cleared up...for now.

still having intermittent issues, and I think I may have found the problem...

in an earlier post, I reported that I was being routed to ipv4_1.cxl0.c029.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net when using a web browser, but I can no longer ping this address

It looks like the range for these servers run from ipv4_1.cxl0.c020.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net to ipv4_1.cxl0.c037.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net

I can ping the even numbered servers (c020,c022,c024,c026,c028, etc) but can't ping the odd numbered servers (c021,c023,c025, c027, c029, etc.)

Here is a traceroute to ipv4_1.cxl0.c027.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net, showing a possible routing loop:

MacBook:~ cuda74360$ traceroute -w 1 ipv4_1.cxl0.c027.phl001.ix.nflxvideo.net

Is it possible that when the TiVo's don't work, that they are are being directed to one of the odd numbered servers and timing out?

Houkuonchi discovered a flaw in FiOS routing that related to latency issues. See this topic. »Even IP addresses are lower latency than Odd ones?

It's possible that the same problem shows up here, except whether it's reachable or not.
I haven't done the name resolution. Do the servers you can reach resolve to even or odd addresses?

Interesting. It's the opposite for me.

Both addresses work from here. Well, using MTR. I don't have a netflix subscription, so can't test it directly.

Edit to add: MTR on 198.38.110.157 through 160, all traces make it through.
0.xe-10-1-3.GW14.NYC1.ALTER.NET pings about 15ms
netflix-gw.customer.alter.net pings about 48ms

A good distance away. Maybe down to VA then back to Philadelphia.

I can get to all of them now, too. I'll try to stream on my TiVo's later tonight and see what happens.
