[Other] Charter cable, DNS server issues133;

I have Charter in Long Beach California. Like most people today I have a Linksys wireless router set up and my family uses their laptops, smart phones, and tablets to access the Internet. We haven't turned on our old desktop computer in years!

However we frequently have a problem with the DNS servers. A simple example is Google. Frequently if we try to search or even go to Google we're taken to an error page! Quite frustrating. So on my laptop I modified my host file to appropriately use the Google page. On my iPhone and iPads I have to manually modify the inside DNS servers to make it go to the correct Google page. Does anyone know why this is happening?

DNS is settable inside your router. Look at your Linksys router settings for DNS and see what that's set to but, really, there's a setting in Windows for where DNS should be. I don't run Windows so it's in network settings somewhere. You shouldn't have to set it in the host file.

change your DNS settings in your router and it will affect all items on the network.

I don't know about the specific problem you're having, but is your router up to date? I had a WRT54G Linksys that was working perfectly for me I thought, but after a modem update a year or so ago, I had to update it. Just a thought ....

With the lack of any real details from the OP, we can't even be sure if his modem is bridged or not. He may be using the DNS setup in the modem plus something different in his router. Without the exact error message he is getting, he may just be seeing lingering issues of the BGP meltdown earlier this week.

Without more information, who can know. Run 'ipconfig -all' at a command prompt. Look for the active network adapter; should look like this:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
   Connection-specific DNS Suffix Search List : aosake.net

It will have some things different, based on your router configuration. Look for the "DNS Servers:" list. These will be one of:

• The router, if it is acting as a DNS relay.
• Whichever DNS servers are configured on the router.
• Whichever DNS servers are configured in Windows "Network Properties" if manually configured.

Do what NormanS recommended so we can see your adapter settings,.. Gateway, Subnet, DNS servers being utilized etc..

If you are unsure of how to open a command prompt:

»pcsupport.about.com/od/w ··· ws-7.htm

It's quite easy.

Then once in,.. ipconfig /all

would look something like:

c:\Users\Yourname>ipconfig /all

Then the results will display.

From there we can better direct you.
