[Telephone] Phone call quality with Charter Internet/Phone bundleI am planning on getting the Internet/Phone bundle, but wonder how the call quality is. I have a POTS line from AT&T that I would be giving up. Just wondering how much digital artifacts and bounceback on one's own voice they are getting on Charter, which I understand is a variant of VOIP. I hope its of better quality than the cheap VOIP services.
Thanks for any comments on your experience... |

[Telephone] Re: Phone call quality with Charter Internet/Phone bundleCharter has excellent phone service and sound quality. Unlike VOIP like Vonage etc. Charter has their own line separated from internet services. Vonage uses your actual internet connection and depends on it. |

I have had Charter phone for 3 years. I am very satisfied. The quality is much better than AT&T, my previous carrier. I am paying $19 a month with no taxes and fees. |

No issues with their voice product here. It's as good or better than POTS and you can still fax over it as well. |

When properly installed and coax infrastructure is maintained, you'd never notice the difference (POTS vs. VOIP-based). |

In my case, the voice quality was better with Charter than with AT&T.
That said, the only 'gotcha' is, you do need battery backup units, if you wish to call someone when power is out. (Assuming your net is still up). |

Thanks for any comments on your experience... Charter's Telephony isn't like your typical VOIP services that use your existing internet/broadband connection. It's a separate network ip range among other things with dedicated QoS and of course each home with it has a specific modem designed solely for the Telephone service that is not tied into your broadband service at all. The call quality with Charter Phone is as good or better than ATT. No kidding, it's great. Only downside is if power is out, or cable goes out -- So does the phone. If you can handle that.. Then you'll be happy. |

With 30-60Mbps speeds now, QoS really isn't an issue anymore. Ooma sounds just as good as Charter and far better than POTS for only about $3/month depending on the taxes in your area. Unless you're getting an amazing deal, I'd skip Charter phone. Plus if you ever change internet providers, you're phone doesn't have to change too.
Another benefit of Ooma and similar Voip options is that they're portable (I don't think Charter is, but I could be mistaken). You can take your Ooma box anywhere you have an internet connection. |

If you are a new charter customer, get phone and internet. They will give you a bundle price ($50). If not go with ooma |

Ooma is another great alternative. We went from Charter to Ooma and been very happy. Just a little over $3 a month with taxes compared to $30 with Charter. Saving good money now. You can also get Ooma for $99 if you go to the forums. People post coupon codes for $50 off. |

Solution to that is buy a cheap APC UPS. keeps the internet, router, modem, EMTA, and pc on.... when the power goes out, I'm the only one in the neighborhood with a light still on and using the pc. said by Zappa2000:In my case, the voice quality was better with Charter than with AT&T.

OOMA is a somewhat good device/service. Taxes and fees here went up to $5.79 in 2 years from the 3.10 initially.... at first we experienced the "robotic" voice issue. OOMA knew it was an issue, and we waited months for a firmware update to correct it. 2 months after the warranty ran out, the unit went ka-poop. Its hard to cough up another $149 at the time for another. $19.99 for charter phone with no taxes or fees, and not have to worry about the hardware was a better choice. said by KoRnGtL15:Ooma is another great alternative. Which UPS do you have? I'm looking into buying one and any recommendations would be helpful. |

Even by buying a new unit at $99. You are still saving more then going with Charter. Ooma also gives you the option to extend the warranty. Squaretrade is another good option for warranty purposes. A box going out is extremely rare. Ooma is reliable and so is the hardware. You could have had a bad box from the start? We have had zero issues with ours for 9 months now since buying it new. |

if I had a bad box from the start, I don't think it would have lasted 14 months . . . . said by KoRnGtL15:Even by buying a new unit at $99. You are still saving more then going with Charter. I have a APC XS-1500. its one of the "tower" ones. I think it was $129 at office max at the time. it has a display on the front that shows runtime, voltage, etc. |
