FiOS download speeds slow every evening between ~7-11pmI have FiOS 75/75 and over the last week to 10 days have been experiencing a very noticeable dip in my download speeds in the evenings, roughly between 7 - 11pm. It is very curious since my upload speeds are fine, up to 90Mbps even while the download speeds dip down to 8Mbps. I have used speedtest.verizon.net, speedtest.net, and testmy.net all which corroborate the same thing. I have contacted their support and was given another router which I have installed and the problem persists. Once the new router was installed I went through a bunch of troubleshooting steps including connecting a PC directly to the router (bypassing a switch which has my NAS and all ethernet jacks in the house connected to it) and got the same poor download speed results. It's early morning now but here is my trace route results to verizon.net: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600] (c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\Benson Winifred>tracert verizon.net Tracing route to verizon.net [206.46.232.39] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 Also, testmy.net results from early morning:
I will update this post this evening with my results.
The next step they want to take is to send someone out here but the guy said if they find nothing wrong they are going to charge me? |

im betting good money your hitting a choked peer point.
Ive not seen many issues with download speeds except when the routes come over a choked peer. Any other places you can test speed other then the flash based ones...
try the html5 speed test sites as well. |

yes the speedtest.verizon test just gave me 80.91Mbps Down / 91.18Mbps Up very good now. About 7pm tonight I will run these again and see the delta. |

I have the same problem here in Spotsylvania VA. The Verizon tech support told me that the issue is from the Peak Times of 7-11pm. I think there is more to these issues and I am getting tired of this. This has been going on for the past 2-3 months for me. Plus these tests have been done on a wired pc |

thank you very much for posting! I also live in Spotsylvania! I humored the tech I was on the phone with last night and connected one of my pc's straight to the router and what do you know same results.
They want to send someone out here but we know it's ridiculous, it's not a hardware issue on my end for sure. |

I've read a couple people here suggesting HTML5 tests too but they all test horribly for me. I've seen others say HTML5 tests aren't even reliable. Beats me. My co-worker got even worst test results too and he's on FIOS (just in a different part of northern VA). I've always been a bit skeptical of Verizon's speed tests too since for all you know it could be some fake speed test. It's just likely oversaturation of the terminal your house is connected to or a bad PON card at the Central Office (CO). A bit of a long read but this post details my experiences that you're going through now and all the hassle I had to go through. My last post also links to another Verizon forum post with some more details thrown in on page 4 (I have about 3 posts on page 4 of the follow-up link). » forums.verizon.com/t5/Fi ··· 8#M46440 |

I was told by a tech rep that the issue he thinks is coming from one of the hubs here in Virginia. Like I said before, this issue has been going for a few months and if it is caused by internet traffic, they need to upgrade their servers. |

I'll have to try at 7 to 11 PM as well. I live in south Stafford, VA. Wonder if we all go through the same choke point? |

Run a speed test at the top of the hour and at the bottom of the hour. Sometimes the slow down starts around 8pm and 8:30pm. |

At 9 PM on 8/22 I was getting 84/87 at speedtest.net and at Verizon's speed test. Which is pretty much what I get any time of the day. I'm on a 75/75 connection. Sounds like your local node might be overloaded. Those things do happen. |

I'm thinking there may be issues in Culpeper. My grandmother lives in Locust Grove and has DSL; I had some real issues getting a reliable connection to my VPN...and that *should* never leave Verizon's network to hit a chokepoint. |

Has anyone contacted Verizon to let them know that Culpeper is where the issues are? |

If it's Culpeper, then why aren't I seeing any issues? I think it's much closer than that. Like Spotsylvania.
I think all of our traffic goes through the Fredericksburg central office and then to Culpeper.
Show me a traceroute to something like Google and I'll compare notes.

Its slow again here in Spotsylvania VA! This sucks! I did talk to a Verizon tech who is forwarding my feedback to their network team. I told them that traffic is not an excuse for this issue when 2 months ago, I was not having any of these issues. I hope this gets fixed soon and fast! |

That's not a good test since some routers in this path aren't set to reply to ICMP messages. My traceroute is very similar to yours.
And the ping times aren't all that bad either.
I still think the backup is more local to your neighborhood node.
I suggest you contact a Verizon tech via the Verizon Direct tab here on DSL Reports. They might be more responsive than calling Verizon. |

VZ speed tests are on a portion of the vz network that has been saturated.
Better would be a true upload off the network and to watch the traffic to all the points along the way to find the choke. |

I feel your pain. I live in SoCal and my fios is getting to the point its almost unusable at times. And its not local node problems or my router or anything its all the crappy peer links. Last night I was trying to pull some files from my work server and getting a nice fast speed of 23.6kb/s I was flying. I finally put up the money and bought a vyprvpn account routing over the vpn same server same router I was able to pull 10mbit. |
