Apple starts iPhone 5 battery replacement program

»ssl.apple.com/support/ip ··· battery/

If you have an iPhone 5 that shuts off randomly or has seriously reduced battery life, this may be the solution.

I was one of them, and had my battery replaced, so apparently I am due a refund.

Edit: I just called AppleCare. The first line rep hadn't seen this request before. The senior advisor was able to handle things, but had to escalate further to get a refund approved, which apparently takes 4 weeks. If you are going to seek a refund, you may want to wait a few days until the CS agents are more aware, and perhaps until Apple expedites the process.

Of course they do this about a month after I paid Apple to replace my iPhone 5 battery for this reason. Looks like they might still issue refunds if that was done. Will be calling tomorrow.

I called in and they confirmed they will be refunding the amount I paid to my card.

Called them this morning for my 5 that's collecting dust, and the rep said this just hit his desk at 6am this morning so he was a little slow at getting my replacement set up.

When you type your serial number into the checker on the website, does it say you are eligible, or does it return that you are not eligible because "your serial number is not affected by the issue or your battery has already been replaced"?

It said "not eligible because it has already been replaced or was not affected" or something like that. It gave the Apple CS number to call with questions or if you had already paid to have it done. They gave no trouble at all in setting up the refund.

Mine is not in the affected range, and I've had no issues with battery life.

Had my iPhone 5 replaced over the weekend. Apparently there is a possible issue when they try to replace battery that it does not come out cleanly. If this happens they stated they will issue a loaner phone while they send yours out to be repaired (seemed strange). I had applecare on mine so when the battery did not come out cleanly they simply gave a replacement phone.

Although the senior adviser stated it may take up to 4 weeks to get the refund, I got an email today saying the refund was approved. So less than 24 business hours, actually.

If you have this problem with the phone, you'll know it. Rather than battery life declining gradually, it all of a sudden gets much worse. And the phone will start shutting off at random times.

Nope definitely not seeing that. According to a battery utility I have 95% capacity after 287 cycles. That's excellent IMO.

My original iPhone 5 was starting to have battery issues. I'm pretty sure it would have been eligible for battery replacement. But then I had a "happy" accident back in April and got the phone replaced under AppleCare+. The difference in battery life between the old and new phones was huge.

I just did a diagnostic on my iPhone 5 and it shows the battery is indeed failing, I scheduled an appt to see a specialist in the store and see what they can do.

Thanks for posting this. I've been having issues and my serial number qualified. My shipping box is on the way from Apple right now so that I can send this off to be fixed.

I'm getting really irritated now. I "overnighted" my phone by dropping it off at the FedEx depot on Fri morning at 7:00am. They didn't acknowledge receipt of it until midday Monday. Then it spend about 72 hours in "diagnosis" status. Around midnight last night it went to a status of "Return: product replacement pending." I've had no email from them about this status change, no notification of shipment or FedEx tracking number, and very little idea WTF is up with my device and when it may show up here again.
Step 1 Request
September 15, 2014 : Product received by service center

Step 2 Service
September 18, 2014 : Service completed

Step 3 Return
September 18, 2014 : Product replacement pending
Last time I opted to ship for repair it was a tight 72 hour turn around. WTF is going on?

Yeah, I guess they'll send me a refurb for some reason--maybe the tech broke mine while working on it.

Another night has passed and the status hasn't changed again. *sigh*
