[CATV] Do STB's use bandwidth?

Might be a really dumb question, but do the STB's that Charter gives you use bandwidth? Does it count against caps? I've had 3 of them now since Charter went digital and I don't think I've ever used this much bandwidth in a month, ever!

I don't do anything heavy on the internet as I have a life, and in fact, am very seldom on here except in the morning, for the most part, but my router indicates that I've used this much bandwidth in the last month. I know it's not squat, but just wondering. Used to be I probably would've used half this amount in a normal month.

2014-08-23 to 2014-07-25)
Down 21.28 GB
Up 1.54 GB
Total 22.82 GB

FWIW,
No, none of my neighbors or anyone else has access to my network and I'm not infected with anything either!

Well of course it uses bandwidth. It passes data. If you're asking if it counts against your internet cap the answer is no. And any data certainly wouldn't show up on your router logs.

23 GB is hardly "heavy". Just since August 1st were at 150 GB. Do your PC on all the time? That will use bandwidth. Do you have auto updates on?

The first part of your reply is all I needed and exactly what I thought.

Second part has no significance, as no, computers are not on all the time and I let NOTHING auto update, except AV, and as stated, I have a life!

Seems rather odd that total amount of data shows up as usage, but nothing in logs.

Thanks

STBs utilize non-DOCSIS frequencies for TV service, so they have no impact, nor use the DOCSIS network.

It means if you're 100% sure it's impossible anything else is pulling that much data then it must be the STB.

On regular basis I use between 1-1.5 terabytes of data a month. 20gb of transfer is nothing

...or background traffic, like ARP, DHCP, DNS, ICMP, etc. although 20GB is pretty high for that. 5 GB is pretty common.

Really? This was necessary for a website dedicated to this stuff filled with people discussing these topics?

You practically guaranteed insults here with that line alone. Many people on this site make a living using the internet or being involved.

i have never once gotten a bandwidth warning ( i am a heavy user like 1 to 5 tb a month ) and i pay for the 100meg

also might i add i have 4 friends who work for charter and they say " you really REALLY have to piss somebody off to get them to yell at you for your usage "
