Re: [WIN7] windows update not runningOk, Let's dig in a little deeper...
In the Start menu Search box, type in: services.msc
Right-click on the search result, and choose Run As Administrator.
Check to see that the following services are running and enabled (Automatic startup):
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Windows Update
If they are NOT started and enabled, then change them to do so. (Rt Click, Properties).

The background was set to manual. The windows update was set to automatic delayed start.
I changed both to automatic and restarted, but the problem didn't resolve.
I rechecked the services.msc., and background intelligent stayed at automatic but windows update went back to delayed start. |

That's fine...
Now, Reboot once more, and just try to run Windows Update via the Start menu.
If it fails again, check to see if the error message has changed... Please Post your results. |

Also, when I click "view update history" only a blank page with an "ok" button at the bottom shows up where the updates would normally be listed. |

The error message is still the same. |

I know it sounds redundant, but Try running the Windows FixIt one more time, now that we have the Services in a running state...
If that doesn't help, then I'm at a loss... Perhaps someone else here has a better insight into this...

I tried it again, and something changed but it's still not working. |

Reboot again, and try starting Windows Updates from the start menu again. |

No luck.
Maybe despite windows update saying that it's not working, it will actually work in the background. |

One last straw... Let's get your Windows Disk Cleanup wizard updated to allow you to find and clean the WUpdate Cache.... Go Here to get the patch: » support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386Since Windows Update isn't working, using WU to get it is a Catch-22... Scroll down about halfway, and you'll see a direct link... (I believe you need the x64 version, correct?) Follow the directions to download and install... Then, you may be able to clean up the cache, and get WU back online (Hopefully)... -Tursiops_G. |

It wouldn't install. I got an installation error. I tried the x64 version and the x86 version with the same result. |

At this point, I'm at a loss... Sorry. Back at the FixIt page, there's a link to posts from the Microsoft Community about this specific issue... I'd check there for more info. Also, maybe someone else here on this forum may have more insight into this problem... I'd only consider a Reinstall of Win7 as an Absolute LAST Resort... -Tursiops_G. |

Should you choose to proceed, there is a more "aggressive" MS Fixit : To automatically reset Windows Update components » support.microsoft.com/kb/971058I can't speak personally for it's effectiveness. |
