MLSE the kings of corporate welfare

If it wasn't bad enough they had their hand out to the province so they could host the All Star Basketball game, now they've convinced Toronto city Council to give them some free land at the Ex to build a practice stadium for the Raptors.

But they, it's supposed to be a great financial deal for the city, MLSE builds the facility for $30m and in in 30 years when it's worn out and due for replacement the city gets to buy it for $1.5m. Some deal eh? The taxpayer gets saddled with the repairs and rebuild (and you know MLSE is going to let it slide in the final years).

How about paying some rent? Robbers and BHELL have plenty of cash.

Include the land, and it's a deal. It can be sold to developers for a whole lot more than 1.5 million.

The land is already owned by the city, on the Exhibition grounds

The city also gets access to the facility for parks and rec use, in spite of Rob Ford's hot air.

Don't the Raptors have a practice court in the ACC? Why the heck do they need a dedicated facility?

It's not big enough nor up to date. The separate facility is required to host the 2016 NBA All Star game.

Ottawa has a deal like this for the "new" landsdowne. A horrible deal in my opinion, every team that does this lets things slide into disrepair the last 5 years.

And they rent it out at $83/hr, hardly petty cash for someone living in TCHC.

Lots of screaming going on with the BILLS , Ralph Wilson Stadium (they're locked in till 2019 IIRC) is not much better then a college one. If they Bills stay in Buffalo, watch the lobbying for a new stadium begin.

At the same time, why do they need public land to build? They sold Maple Leaf Gardens, that would have been a good practice court (if not more).

Or not. The rental fee can be waived and absorbed by the city. Nice try, but Ford's logic is simply silly.

They are paying rent - something the Star conveniently left out.

MLSE will pay to build the $30-million facility and lease the property from the city for 20-years at a rate of $205,000 a year.

Though to be fair - The Star and CBC both leave out the part about 1/3 breaks on the development fees and property taxes.

Not saying it's a perfect deal - or even a good one. But get your facts straight if you're going to complain about it.

i can't even begin to imagine how much the Redpath (sugar) land is worth if they ever decide to sell/move...that's a pretty sweet parcel of land.

I think that has already been shut down. Not sure if there are plans for development yet, though it would surprise me if there weren't any.

Quality meats applied for creditor protection back in May, not sure if it's still here. But the nimbys who bought in the area, knew there was a slaughterhouse there, constantly complain about the smell.

Same with the nimby's who bought their shiny new condo townhomes near the Maple Leaf plant off Weston Road around The Junction.

They're all gone, they're now townies and on the south side is a big box plaza.
