Re: Notebook computer recommendations? Not going to help with the bloatware but HP should have put a utility on it that will make recovery media for you, the caveat is the program only allows you to make a copy once (either onto a DVD or memory stick). IMHO its worth the few bucks for a memory stick to make a backup, if you ever sell it you can wipe the drive and re-install the system image. |

lenovo is probably more forward thinking than HP I don't see any drivers on the drive. I'm not too concerned about getting the drivers though. |

I'm gonna give that backup a whirl soon. Will this process commandeer the entire usb drive or just save the image as a file on it? The reason I ask is I currently have just one usb drive and it's got a bunch of stuff on it that I need to access from time to time. |

This will not format your usb drive, to reinstall the image you use a 8.1 install disk, the option to reinstall your image is in the advanced options if I remember correctly.
I keep mine on a 3TB external I have plugged into my computer, along with a bunch of other stuff. |

confirmed that it doesn't format the drive, just puts a backup on the drive. How does one restore? From a windows 8 dvd? |

If you are using windows 8 at the end of the backup it will ask you if you want to make a recovery disk, make one and use it when you need to do a recovery. If you are using windows 8.1 it does not give you the option to make a recovery disk. What you do is boot from your 8.1 install disk, after you select your language select>>>> repair your computer>>>>troubleshoot>>>>advanced options>>>>system image recovery, then the backup you created earlier. |

Unless you really need the portability, you are wasting your money. You'll pay more for the laptop than a desktop. And you'll still want a larger monitor and a keyboard, using more desk space than a tower would. |

I've never made a recovery stick for HP, but I have made the for Lenovo, Dells and Acers and they always asked to erase the usb stick... |

I won't carrying around the system to coffee shops and the like, but it's 10 times more portable than my previous system (and smaller). |

Ya I recall that too for a Lenovo running Windows 8. It did the back up my placing the image in a folder on my external hard drive. Works for now. I'll have to try it out once things have cooled down a little technologically (I've had a stressful couple of days with rooting/de-rooting/OTA updates/re-rooting my HTC one m8 phone). |

Ahh ok, thanks, so the windows 8.1 dvd that I downloaded should do the trick for allowing me to back-up that image. That's perfect. |

Just wanted to give a final update.
I've wiped the system clean, reinstalled with a non-HP windows, reinstalled all the drivers and the system is clean!
Here's an interesting tidbit of info.
The pre-installed windows had a problem with HDMI audio, specifically it didn't work (the audio driver actually had an exclamation point on it). AFter I reinstalled Windows, I had the same problem after installing all the HP drivers. Had to go to Intel's website and install the latest HD4600 graphics drivers, which includes the HDMI audio! On top of that, the Nvidia drivers from HPs site failed to install with the installer stating it wasn't for my system! Ended up grabbing those from Nvidia's site. Thankfully, the system is now even better than it was out of the box. |
