Cracked sideview mirror

Click for full size
Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

My dad got a new mazda 3 on Saturday. On Sunday before driving, he was adjusting the side mirrors with the controls and the entire mirror on the right side cracked. See picture.

What could have caused that?

Something had to be wedged between the glass and the housing. Perhaps it was something put there for shipping that the dealership forgot to remove?

It is under warranty, have the dealer and Mazda replace it.

Best post ever... take picture of mirror, but better... that I guess... does not mirror anything? rofl.

What could have caused that? As said something wedged behind it, pulled on it wrong, just a function of it being glass... glass was treated wrong...

When we brought in the car the dealer claims there was nothing behind it so something had to of hit the mirror so it's not covered under warranty. But they agreed to replace it as a courtesy.

Their reasoning doesn't mesh with the events as witnessed. He says he was pressing the button and instead of moving there was a large pop sound and the glass cracked. From that point, pushing the control buttons had no effect on that mirror. So I'm thinking something was jammed and the tension cracked the mirror and broke the control mechanism.

Ask to see the PDI report as I bet it was a shipping wedge for vibration control that was supposed to be removed, but was missed.

Normally I would blame the teenager.

But not this time.

How about taking a picture from 6 to 8 inches away?

My dad took the picture but it's too late as they already replaced the mirror.

I find it odd that it cracked in fairly straight lines...

Mazda is known to have mirror issues. Something about vibrations. My son had one that cracked exactly like that. His happened by side swiping another mirror tho on a parked car. Just might be something a dad doesnt want to tell his son.

Correct. Sometimes it produces a star pattern radiating out from the center of impact.

Re: Cracked sideview mirror

you can tell from the photo it started from the right side since smaller pieces to the right and bigger ones to the left

op's photo

The mirror appears to be the driver side. since the mirror is 1:1 viewing angle
