Changing NAT type of our network?

Hello,

I was wondering how I would go about changing the NAT of our network:

Thomson ST516v6 (routed PPP) -> D-Link 810L (DHCP Connection with UPnP enabled) -> Apple Express/Extreme

I have a roommate who wants to run his PS4 off his Apple Router and needs his NAT Type to be open (2?).

When we tried just using the Apple Router alone with the modem it worked fine.
When we tried just using the D-Link Router alone with the modem, NAT Type was restricted (3?).

The Apple router struggled to handle all the devices in our home (like 15+ lol) which came with some packet loss.

The D-Link was able to handle the traffic fine.

What do I need to do?

Thanks

First of all, you are running double NAT which is silly... The way this should be configured is as follows.

ST516v6 modem in bridge mode
D-Link router in routed PPPoE mode
Apple router in bridge mode

Also putting the PS4 in the DMZ is another thing to add to the list.

Alright I'll attempt that as soon as I can, is this the configuration I want if my roommate wants to connect to the Apple router through the PS4?

Modem (bridged) -> D-Link (routed PPP) -> Apple (bridged)

I tried the following a while ago:
Modem (routed PPP) -> D-Link (bridged) with the PS4 in DMZ..
but it still returned NAT Type 3 >

Make the modem bridge and the router handle the PPPoE login.

What you said here:

is right.

If I set my modem in bridged mode, with just the one D-Link 810L router behind it..

Which do I choose? Which gives the best shot at the PS4 working with the router?

Thanks

None of those choices are options for DSL except PPPoE. You must choose PPPoE in order for the Internet to even work. Choosing any of those other options equals no working Internet at all since TSI's DSL is PPPoE only.

are you using your d-link router as an access point or your apple?

if i recall correctly apple express and extreme are both capable of just being APs.

so here's a cheaper and better way:
- use the Thomson with PPP
- get a switch, ditch the d-link. or if you want, you can use the d-link as a switch by turning routing off, but i'd rather you get a low power switch for the energy savings.
- apple express/extreme as an AP.
- turn on UPnP.

this way, you don't have to port forward your PS4, and you won't have double NAT. guaranteed this will give you a type 2 NAT.

So I tried running both of the following:

Bridged mode Thomson ST516 -> Apple Router (Routed PPP)
and
Routed PPP Thomson ST516 -> Apple Router (Bridged mode)

and the NAT problem seems to be solved.

However, I should mention that I am still getting ridiculously high packet loss.

I've made a post about it before: »[DSL] Intermittent Packet Loss 15/1

»www.pingtest.net/result/ ··· 1340.png
»www.pingtest.net/result/ ··· 1096.png

Any idea why the packet loss is this damn high?

i rather you do this setup:
Routed PPP Thomson ST516 -> Apple Router (Bridged mode)

and as for your packet loss, there could be a lot of variables that would be an issue. in any case, you might as well post in the teksavvy direct forum.

Yeah I already made a post in the direct forum, they couldn't figure out the problem.

Can anyone recommend a budget oriented good quality ADSL2+ modem for a 15/1 connection from Teksavvy? I'm thinking of replacing the modem.

You can't get much more budget oriented than the TP-Link TD-8616. Just keep in mind that it won't ever function as a router as it's a modem only. If you want routing capability you'll need to upgrade to the TP-Link TD-8816 for hardly much more money.
