Why no 40mhz on 5Ghz?

I have an old E3000 and I just noticed that on the status page it says that the 5Ghz side is doing 20Mhz. I have it set to 40Mhz only in the settings page.

So is the status page wrong and it is actually doing 40Mhz or is the settings not working and forcing 40Mhz? Or am I missing something?

What connection speed do your devices show when they're near the router?

Not all channels are allowed to be 40 Mhz wide in all countries. Channel 36 should be fine in the US.

Try changing to setting your own channel vs auto mode.

Which channel should I pick? It appears to be on 36 right now; should I leave it there?

What speed should it say when I am at 40Mhz?

If you have a way to scan channels, pick one that isn't being used. 36 is probably fine though.

If 144 was the highest you saw close to the router, I'd say anything higher than that. 300 should be the highest.

Holy crap! Yeah, I'll say. I picked 36 since it was already on there anyway and it now says 300. So yeah I guess it worked.

Thanks a bunch. Geez, I've had this thing for a long time and never noticed that. Only reason I looked at it now is because I happened to notice that there a firmware update for the e3000 this year so I started playing around with it.

Thanks again.

No problem. My in-laws have one and I've noticed a few quirks as well.
