The ads are only injected via Comcast's traditional hotspots, not user home routers that have been recently modified to offer public Wi-Fi access.

However, the actual article quotes the Comcast spokesman as saying:

Douglas said the advertising campaign only applies to Xfinity's publicly available Wi-Fi hot spots that dot the landscape. Comcast customers connected to their own Xfinity Wi-Fi routers when they're at home are not affected, he said

And what about using a Xfinity owned, publicly available WiFi hotspot from someone else's home? My guess is that you will get the ads. And it will only be a matter of time until commercial ads start showing up.

This probably helped justify Comcast's decision some time ago to only start offering Gateways for lease to subs and phase out discrete modems and routers. Also shows before that, why they made available a free router to those currently leasing a modem. And here I thought all this time it was merely for inventory reasons............
