WestJet to charge some travellers for first checked bagWestJet Airlines Ltd. has joined rival Porter Airlines Inc. in charging travellers a fee for their first checked bag. » www.theglobeandmail.com/ ··· 0598212/-------------------------------------------------------------------- of course my 50 lbs carry on will now be strapped to my head, no reclining my seat with that weight on my head. if it falls off of my head at least the shock won't be so severe as falling out of an overhead bin. i was going to write MLA Allison Redford to help her people her voters, but she is no more.. do our elected politicos care that we are being nickled and dimed, has anyone of them spoken up on behalf of taxpayers?...no, they are too busy flying with friends and family on our dime. |

West Jet used to be a friendly carrier that would do anything to please you. Things have changed. Last year they stopped ordering new planes with TV's in them, instead renting out IPAD's with useless software on them.
They also switched from just having just one basic class, to having a 4 tier system, with only a very limited number of the lowest tier economy seating available.. forcing you to switch to the next highest tier, which gets you nothing extra at all, but costs %30 more.
And now this... :/ |

That is quite disappointing. I have always liked flying WestJet but have noticed many changes and have to say they are slowly turning me off them. The hard part is that other options are limited. |

I think they already do |

They do not, except for transborder flights. |

One of my biggest pet peeves about companies is when the advertised price really isn't the advertised price. If you want to raise more revenue then increase the economy fare. Hiding fare increased by adding other charges is a d**k move in my opinion.
In reality it makes little difference. I wouldn't avoid westjet. I still go with whatever flight is cheaper from whichever company offers it. I do often prefer Air Canada because they used smaller planes (for the flights I use) that only have two seats on each side (instead of 3 on each side). It makes flying between BC and Alberta a bit more comfortable.
The Air Canada overselling their flights thing has little impact on me because I always register online well before my flight leaves (mostly so I can reserve a window seat). So I don't really mind Air Canada....
Westjet does seem to be going downhill quick. |

i think it's about time companies be forced to advertise the real prices.
another thing that bugs me is the myriad of car ads for "2015 XYZ Car - only $19,995", but then show a photo of the top trim that is actually $29,995. |

Though I can recall a recent Civic ad, where they show several models including the Basic civic which you can easily identify becuse of the plastic hubcaps. |

Meh. Doesn't make a difference to me. I know how car pricing works. |

It's a given that the model priced will not be the model shown. But it is an all-in price in Ontario. » www.autos.ca/general-new ··· ice-law/ |

Here is an interesting thought.
What if your bag doesn't fit in the overhead bin? |
|
|
then it gets checked. BUT sometimes when you assume it fits the FA may check it for it at gate side. how will they charge you then?
AND there will be more people attempting to take baggage as carry-on when it shouldn't be. Even now they should be enforcing the check-on size. Now they had better enforce it ! |

What if your bag doesn't fit in the overhead bin? They'd probably force you to either: a) Agree to pay the fee (using those handy portable debit / credit machines) and have the bag transferred to the cargo hold b) Remove you and your bag from the plane altogether, citing non-compliance with the carry on rules (They do have those "handy" bag size checkers at the check in area) Don't think option "b" could ever happen? You're giving them way too much credit if you think they wouldn't do that. NefCanuck |

Now everyone will be carrying 2 carry-ons and the overhead bins will be a joke.
I've been disillusioned with Westjet for awhile now anyway. |

They should check baggage for size prior to boarding and if there is no room in overhead bins or under the seat, they will check it like they do the strollers. I hate it when I board in the last group and the space in the overhead bin where I sit is already filled. Then they put it anywhere they can and I've had it stowed at the back of the plane so I have to wait until everyone has deplaned to get my carry-on. In the newer planes there may be larger overhead space, but more seats crammed together. |

I know how car pricing works. i'm quite aware of how it works as well, that wasn't my point...my point is, if you are going to advertise "From $19,995", then show the $19,995 car...that's all. it would be like an electronics store advertising "TVs from $299" and showing the picture of a top of the line 70" model (that sells for $3599)...or a travel place advertising "Vacations from $99" and showing a nice picture of Antigua, all the while knowing full well the $99 vacation package is to Kanata. |
