About how much free space will we need to install OS 8?

Getting fairly tight here.

FWIW, you can always update via iTunes. Don't think that method requires any free space on the device itself.

I remember OS 7 needed 1.7 or 1.3 GB and I had to dump some things USING iTunes connected.

Big day tomorrow. I'll probably wait until after 11pm so it will download quick.

I'll download ASAP for my iPad Air and wait about a week for my iPhone 5.

I'm getting errors while checking, started about 5 minutes ago.

That just means the server you get to check hasn't got the update yet (most likely).

It's not like everyone will see it exactly at the same time given the number of servers that it has to be distributed to...

iTunes is still reporting 7.1.2 is latest. 15 mins should be enough time to populate the servers.

Now it's giving an error that iPhone software update servers could not be contacted

IOS 8 requires you to have 1.4 GB of memory free. That means deleting those old photos, podcasts, songs and apps that you don't care about anymore. If you're an iCloud user, all of those things will be backed up in the cloud. But if you're not ready to clear space just yet, you'll have to wait to download iOS 8.

Just save the photo folder from the phone to the computer, then delete it off the phone. That should clear up enough space for pretty much everyone.

The space requirement of 1.1gb is for OTA. You can download and install via iTunes to get around the space limitation.

Are you saying that it won't take up any space if you download from iTunes?

I didn't start updating until about 12:25 central. Started on my iPad and it was a little slow but got better. My phone, via iTunes started about 12:50 and the d/load flew.

I expected worse. Now will wait and see if iPhone has trouble authenticating after it updates or whatever it is it does.

Your computer will host the downloaded file instead of the file having to sit on your phone.

After it is downloaded, does the file get deleted?
