That can't be right, is it ? Did Apple forget that a big percentage of their users have devices with 8gb total ?

--------

No, it's not....

The system update takes up about 1 GB of space, but iPhones and iPads require users have 4.6 GB of free space before they can download and install iOS 8.

Do it via iTunes to help with the space constraints.

Ok I just deleted some music to get it to 4.6GB of free space. I can put the muaic back on after. But I will wait since I will be going to the 6 next month anyway. Thanks I thought the iOS was going to be 4.5GB in size. I have a 16GB.

Been there, done that, was called wrong.

»iPad Air's hilarious requirements for iOS 8

You need to install it from a computer without having to erase everything.

I don't think that is accurate at all.

When I updated my 32GB iPad Air (WiFi + Cel) to iOS 8, it cited a necessary 3.6GB of free space. Naturally, I didn't have the space available but I tried to make it by deleting a few Apps and some books.

I was thinking there was no way I was going to be able to delete enough to make up the necessary space all the while checking free space. I don't think I made up the necessary free space but the install started and went to completion.

So far, I've seen both a 4S and a 5, both running 7.1.2, unable to install iOS 8 OTA because "at least 4.6GB" is required. Does seem a bit... odd.

Not really.

Host, download, decompress. So it's 3+x the size.

Exactly
Just updated my mother's 4s (16gb) over iTunes and my sister's 5 (32gb).
Will wait a while to update my 5s though I'm enjoying my jailbreak tweaks

As soon as I got home from work, my daughter asked me to update her iPhone. She told me she deleted "everything" in order to make room but still didn't have enough space. I told her not to worry about it... She said her friends all had to do the same and one of them took 18 hours to update (more like 17-1/2 hours to download and 1/2 to update - there's probably 2-3 iPhones at that house too, all downloading it separately).

I downloaded the IPSW file directly to our PC while she was at her friend's house and updated it when she got home in less than 30 minutes.
