Re: FIOS horrible Apple download speeds. This is definitely a problem with FiOS. I tested it by using my phone as modem plugged into my pc and it was downloading full speed on LTE with VZW. At work on Cablevision, I was getting full speed as well. |

Well after taking 4 hours to download the Mavericks update earlier - now it's saying an hour just to update Safari. LOL.
Never saw anything this bad before. |

Just thought I'd add to the thread. I had been using iOS 8 a few days before it released because I'm a registered app developer with Apple, so I didn't download iOS 8 during the rush and had no issues then. I'm not updating another phone of the same model for a friend on the FiOS connection at work and it was giving estimated times over a day. Switching over to Google's DNS instantly resolved the issue and it downloaded the ~2GB update in just under 5 minutes. |
|
|
Does anyone have a secondary line within their home to test something?
For example: If an update via FiOS takes 4 hours to the Apple TV or iOS 8, plug in that device via your secondary ISP connection, (whether it is Comcast, TWC etc) and see if it is better?
Then we can be sure that it something is truly the cause.
Thanks. |

Lots of people stated earlier in the thread that using another ISP (Comcast for example), alleviated the problem. |

So then can I assume that the problem is NOT with Apple Servers, but with FiOS? For whatever reason. |

I put in the 8.8.8.8 DNS entry into my MacBook. Stopped and restarted the Safari download - it was over in 10 seconds. So - looks like VZ's DNS servers are wreaking the havoc. |

Once you download the update by putting in the DNS, how to you go back to the regular setup? NO matter if it is Apple TV or your iPad, Computer etc.
Thanks
Also, I have never done the DNS thing. Does it mess anything up that a novice, like me in this situation, will know what to do and how to revert back to normal? |

I do not quite get all of the Jargon. But what I can get, is that this is a Server problem just with FiOS.
Can they fix it? Or is it all just overloaded, and need another week to calm down? So then finally some people can get the updates. |
|

It seems very unlikely that the servers are still overloaded 1+ week out from the release date.
Every other ISP gets great performance at this point (I just downloaded an iOS update at 100MB/sec - yes, megabytes - on my work connection), so it's obviously a FiOS-related issue. The question is whether Apple is at fault for bad routing to Verizon or if there's some issue with Verizon's network/routes to Apple.
Basically, take the same blame game people played with Netflix and Verizon. Replace Netflix with Apple. That's the best you'll see from this forum - only Verizon's network engineers truly know where the problems lie, and they don't seem to be speaking much. |

Thanks for the explanation, Thinkdiff. I Appreciate it.
I guess that I just have to wait patiently until the issue is resolved, then. Could be another couple days to a week, I figure. IF they know about it.
There is nothing else I can do.
Beisdes getting the Updates to Apple TV and iOS, I can play video streams normally via Apple TV with no problems.
I guess they take a different route, then the updates do.
The weird thing is that I have Never experienced this in my years of having FiOS. Usually I give it a couple days from the initial release because of all the traffic. I could update everything fast and easily by then.
I even remember other sites like WatchESPN being laggy etc. when the releases were released. Even the internet as a whole slowed down a bit. But nothing this bad before. |

I guess they take a different route, then the updates do. I've also had no problem uploading. As in iOS device backups. My ATV update swings between 5 to 9 hours and back down. It's now at 3 and it's about 1/3 done. |

You got that it is a server issue, but they are Apple's servers. Apple chooses the CDN and routing, not Verizon. Apparently Apple can select good CDN servers and routes since my dowload onky took nine minutes |

Yeah. I don't get it.
I just hope that this issue gets resolved ASAP.
I haven't called yet to ask What's the Deal. But I might have to, just to say something. And to see IF they ARE aware of it. |

Then are you saying that it is the Luck of the Draw? Even after a week of all the updates releases?
Or is it is The Luck of the Draw on FiOS, compared to another ISP? Because all others seem to be working just fine. From what others have said. |
|
|
Are the people saying this is exclusive to fios ignoring Smith's post, or just discounting it for some wierd reason? |

So then, would you say that this is Apple's problem, not Verizon's? OR any other ISP, for that matter. |

You should be able to draw your own conclusion by reading the entire thread as a whole. I'm not going to state mine further to avoid the arrows that would likely be sent my way. |

I'm confused. So are you saying that Apple is deliberately singling out verizon and insuring bad service for verizon customers?
I understand there may be handshake issues (or whatever the proper term is) but that should put responsibility on both entities to get the situation fixed. Doesn't need finger pointing, it just needs to get worked on. |

If it is not verizon then why does itunes work with optimum, TWC, and other cable providers that allow update and recovery download with itunes? It is obviously it is verizon FiOS issues... Not apple. Plus I use my neighbor's verizon DSL and itunes work fine with that but with my verizon FIOS it won't work. So it is not apple's issues. It is VERIZON's issues. I even asked my friend who is on Optimum and he said his itunes worked fine with them, I even asked my other friend who are on TWC in NC and she said her itunes work fine with the update and recovery download. |

Ha.
Now just getting simple App Updates are taking a lot longer.
8 minutes to get a 26MB app file downloaded. When it would normally take seconds. I am not even going to try the 800MB file for GarageBand. That will take hours.
And just think. Next month when Yosemite releases, how slow it all will be, if this does not get fixed.
People still trying to get the iOS8 update, while others are still trying to get the Apple TV update. Several weeks after their release. Then people trying to get Yosemite.
When will this all end? |
