A queston about DSL line speed capabilities

A friend of mine has decided to move to Teksavvy..

He was told he could get up to 50 down but only 7.6 up; he has a Bell POTS line in Toronto.

Since his connection uses the same wires for download and upload, why can he not get the full 15/10 that he wanted to buy?

Is there something that could be changed to enable the full 15/10?

DSL is limited by distance and that affects the upload a lot. The reason he can't get 10 is because he lives too far from the Node.

The distance does not affect the download in the same manner?

That is unfortunate since moving is obviously not a possibility

Thanks for the insight.

Hey there,

We're usually able to place an order for VDSL (15/10 or higher) even if you only have 7Mbps upload allowed... usually (EDIT: You won't necessarily actually get the full 10 up though). Distance does affect download as well, but upload is usually the first to suffer.

Thanks Kris. He has placed the order already and is just waiting for his notice to the "old" isp to conclude.

Strangely, he does not remember being told that a tech would have to come to his house when he switches to Teksavvy. Is this because he is going to use the Bell POTS line and was already with a third party ISP rather than Bell?

Hm. A tech does usually need to come out for anything other than Bell-to-us migration (and even then sometimes), even if you have POTS. Part of installation is proving sync to a modem jack (assuming the jack is already wired, anyway). I'd have your friend double check his communications with us.
