[Appliances] GE spacesaver microwave and a dangerious faultWe have a GE spacesaver microwave, about 10 years old. No complaints with it until now. It's failing BUT the failure mode is it stays on. If you open the door it stops but close the door and it on again. No light, no turntable but the microwaves are on full. If you leave the room, expecting it to turn off. It doesn't.
It's not worth trying to fix but I thought the failure mode was interesting to owners of the unit.

No, Microwaving your Smart Phone Will NOT Charge Its Battery Outline Circulating message claims that placing your smart phone in a microwave for one minute will fully charge its battery. Microwave Oven © Depositphotos.com/TpaBMa2 Brief Analysis Microwaving your phone certainly will NOT charge its battery. It WILL totally destroy your phone and may damage your microwave oven as well. The message is just a nasty prank designed to trick gullible recipients into ruining their smart phones. While most recipients are likely to quickly see the claims in the message as the nonsense they are, a few more wide-eyed recipients may actually believe what they read and destroy their expensive phones. » www.hoax-slayer.com/micr ··· ry.shtml |

its funny this post was mentioned.
i have the same model same age about 2005, and when the unit fires the magnatron, you hear the relays kick out and the panel shuts down and the entire unit dies
they have an identical model newer version at HD online for about 240 with tax free ship and disposal of old unit. mine will be here wednesday |

When my over-the-range GE died, I went cheap. I found a Frigidaire at Lowes for around $180 that had a similar size and output power. It's worked great for several years. The only annoying thing is you have to hit cancel before opening the door, otherwise you have to listen to the complete end-of-cycle beep sequence. Oh, and the end-of-cycle display message is Good instead of Done. |

Most likely the relay that powers the magnetron transformer (or inverter) has failed closed, in other words the contacts of the relay have welded together and won't open.
Not that unusual of a failure mode considering the very large amount of current that the relay must switch on and off.
This can technically happen with most microwave ovens from any manufacturer.
This is why there are safety interlock switches on the door, so you don't get blasted with a face full of microwaves when you open the door when such a failure has occurred. |

at least you didn't get stuck with one of these..........I wish it WOULD fail |

said by former qwest:i reposted it in all things apple, credit to Steve. I agree it's funny. And that's why I am also a bit concerned that it's too realistic. Parodies need a good dose of realism, but they need a less-subtle clue to fakery than the longer charging time at higher wattage. At minimum, a release date of 1 April. The issue is liability. It's so realistic and well-done that someone (or their kid) may destroy their new phone and their microwave. I am all for sarcasm and humor, but I don't want to be responsible for harm coming to anyone, or anyone's stuff. Think about what a judge or jury would think. They might tell one plaintiff they're an ignoramus, but would that hold up if a class is certified? I agree that's about as unlikely as somebody actually doing this, but if I were posting graphics like this, I'd make sure my umbrella liability was paid on time. |

We used to have one that would do this
Since we were using a microwave solely to melt butter and the like we did not bother to replace or repair it.
One day, we moved, and I knocked it a little inadvertently. It stopped doing this from this day on...
Finally it died one day because it was on the same circuit as a dishwasher and the magnetron blew. |

It's been working fine although I've been unpluging it when not at home. We've been looking at new ones and it seems that you can get it in any color as long as it's brushed stainless. |

We broke down and "invested" 150 $ in a panasonic one. It's true what they say: There are Microwave ovens and Panasonic Microwave ovens...
Stainless is cool though. Much less prone to yellowing and it fits with any color ! |

The microwaves at my office also say GOOD when finished, always cracked me up. I figured the half it wasn't displaying was RIDDANCE because the poor microwaves are subjected to the most brutal torture of "what the Indian contractors brought in for lunch" |

I certainly agree with moofo, Panasonic definitely makes the best microwaves out there these days! The Inverter Technology is a dramatic improvement in how microwaves operate! When you choose the lower setting in anything but one with Inverter Technology the system just turns on and off the magnetron tube and cycles it to approximate a lower power setting. With Inverter Technology the power of the entire system is lowered proportionally so you end up with continuous power that's lower instead of spurts of 100% power! It cooks things much more even and it's defrosting capabilities are marvelous. Panasonic invented the technology and I believe now they are licensing it to a few other manufacturers. |

I have one of those Panasonic inverter microwaves, and it's great as a cooking appliance. Unfortunately the one I have (early-2000s manufacture) puts out a ton of EMI in the WiFi band, and will kill any streaming media using WiFi when it's in use. Quite a few complaints on the Internet of this for the Panasonic microwaves. |

We have one of the newer ones and it doesn't put out any detectable levels of EMI. |

Same here, kills my 2.4ghz band but the 5ghz band seems to be okay. |

It doesn't seem to be direct radiation from the magnetron that's leaking, but rather bad EMC design for the inverter electronics. I'd imagine it could be a bigger swath than just the 2.4 ISM band, but haven't bothered to find out. |
