Hypothetical question: What would happen if Apple acquired nVidia? In a hypothetical question, how do you think the landscape would change if Apple acquired nVidia and all it's patents? Do you think it would change the PC landscape in terms of gaming and HD content? Do you think it would give Apple an unfair competitive advantage against the Windows and Android platforms? Would it increase Apple market share in the long run with new pc and post-pc products? |

it would upend Apple's ability to run its business the way it typically does. They only acquire companies to bring all of the employees and technology in house. Integrating something like nVidia would be nearly impossible, given the size of nVidia and the diversity of products they make. It would also be hard to shut down all of the external operations given the enormous number of contracts I'm sure nVidia has on the books. If you look at the silicon chip makers Apple has previously acquired, they were all small, and IIRC most of them were actually chip design consulting firms, and not consumer-facing companies.
The acquisition doesn't make sense for Apple anyway, I think, as they are doing more and more SoC-based GPUs and are happy to contract to AMD or nVidia for the relatively small number of dedicated GPUs they need to buy for the higher end Macs. |
