Arris DG1670A Low Downstream BandwidthWe've had the TWC Maxx upgrade for the last week or so at 100/10 with an Arris DG860. We would consistently see 100 down and 10 up as purchased. Upgraded to 200/20 today and the techs came out to replace with the DG1670. We have a block of static IPs and the configuration is set on the router behind the modem, so the techs got on the phone and had TWC set the new 1670 into bridge mode, just like with the previous 860.
Upload is 20Mbps, which is good, but download never exceeds 35Mbps. We have tested a variety of speedtest servers, even with a PC connected directly into the back of the modem and the router disconnected, just to make sure something else on our network wasn't hogging bandwidth. Just the day before, the DG860 would give us 100 down and 10 up consistently, so we were convinced the new 1670 was faulty. The techs replaced with another 1670 and it didn't fix the problem. The techs even called up TWC again to verify that the modem was receiving the correct config file on startup to set rate limiting appropriately- no problems there. The firmware and config were set to support 200 down and 20 up.
The 1670 is showing all 16 downstream channels at around 40dB SNR and power levels all around 0dBmV. On the docsis side of things, everything looks very stable- the connection never drops, it's just slow as hell. Can't figure out why download bandwidth is so abysmal. Any ideas? |

We had only been using fast ethernet (yes, I realize we would only get 100 down max; we were upgrading to get more upload bandwidth) with a crappy Cisco ASA 5505 (fast ethernet only). Using a fast ethernet NIC directly connected to a computer behind the modem produced the same poor results, but when connecting a gigabit NIC, the problem magically disappeared! It seems like the DG1670 isn't a big fan of fast ethernet customer premises equipment, likely due to firmware bugs. |
